Cardi B has 10 nominations, including Best Artist, and Best New Artist. Childish Gambino has two nominations for his song, “This is America,” for Best Video with a Message and Video of the Year.

Other artists that received multiple nominations include Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Drake, and The Carters, who got eight nominations. Jay Z and wife, Beyonce teamed up to form The Carters.

Big Night Expected for Cardi B

The 25-year-old rapper is set to open the VMA’s after giving birth to her first child just six weeks ago. It will be her first performance since giving birth to a daughter on July 10. She was supposed to go on tour with Mars, but backed out to spend more time with her child.

“I thought that after giving birth to my daughter that 6 weeks would be enough time for me to recover mentally and physically,” she wrote on Instagram. “I also thought that I’d be able to bring her with me on tour, but I think I underestimated this whole mommy thing. Not only am I just not ready physically, I’m not ready to leave my baby behind since the doctors explained it’s not healthy for her to be on the road.”

Cardi B is the odds on favorite to win two of the more prestigious awards. The first is Best New Artist. She is at -750, while the next closet competitor is Lil Uzi Vert at +750. Others in the category include Hayley Kiyoko at +1400, Chloe x Halle, +1600, Bazzi at +2200, and Lil Pump at +3000.

The other category she is expected to win is Artist of the Year. She is -200, while Drake is +300, Grande is +500, Post Malone +1800, Mars +2200, and Camila Cabello +2500.

One Song, Couple of Awards

Childish Gambino, the stage name for actor, musician, comedian, Donald Glover, has seen his song, “This is America” become a huge hit on both the Billboard Top 100, where it reached No. 1, and social media, where the video has been viewed 369 million times.

Glover told one interviewer that he wouldn’t disclose why he made the dark song that explores subjects like materialism, consumption, and exploitation.

“I just wanted to make, you know, a good song,” Glover said tongue in cheek. “Something people could play on Fourth of July.”

The video is the favorite for two awards. The first is Video with a Message, where Bovada has him at -250. The next pick is “1-800-273-8255” by Logic, featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid at +225.

The other nomination is for Video of the Year, where he is an even larger favorite for his song. Glover is listed at -250, while Grande’s “No Tears Left to Cry” is next at +500.
