How to Play Roulette Online
Playing real money roulette for real money online is similar to playing in a land-based casino, with a few exceptions. New players must open an account with an online casino before they can play real money roulette games, which use virtual chips. The gameplay will differ slightly too:
Understanding the Roulette Wheel
Roulette revolves around a spinning wheel with numbered slots. The dealer will take bets from gamblers, spin the wheel, and then throw the ball into it. Whichever players correctly guess the color, number or section, win. In online roulette, a random number generator chooses the number.
European RouletteSingle 0
American RouletteSingle and Double 0
Choosing Roulette Wheel Numbers
The player's goal is to accurately guess the number the ball will land on when the roulette wheel comes to a halt. The numbers on the roulette table correspond to the roulette wheel. In European roulette, the wheel contains 37 numbers from 0-36, and are color-coded in red, black, and green. In American roulette, the wheel has 38 numbers from 00-36, and the numbers are arranged in a different order. These are the same for online roulette games.
Placing Bets in Real Money Roulette Games Online
In online roulette, gamblers must place a bet and then click the 'play' or 'spin' button. For live dealer roulette games, the croupier will spin the wheel and toss a ball in. In standard roulette at online gambling sites, this process is simulated with animations that are based on real world physics and a certified random number generator. After a few seconds, the ball will come to a rest in one of the numbered slots on the wheel.
Basic Roulette Rules
While land-based casinos usually feature a single version of roulette, the best game sites provide a selection of the eight types of roulette games. However, for the purpose of this page, we will be focusing on the roulette table rules for American and European roulette.
The main distinction between American and European roulette is the numbers on the wheel. With a total of 38 numbers ranging from 00-38, American roulette games have a house edge of 5.26%. In contrast European roulette ditches the 00 and has 37 numbers, giving it a house edge of 2.7%.
Roulette starts with players making bets. Choose a number, section or color the ball will land on the roulette wheel and place the bet on the roulette table.
Click 'spin' or 'play'. In live roulette, gamblers can place bets while the ball spins in the roulette wheel. It is only when the croupier states, 'No more bets', that all wagers stop. In online roulette, a video will show the roulette wheel spinning, and the ball entering the game.
Any winnings earned in online roulette will be added to the player's balance.
Roulette Game Variations
The Vegas version of this traditional game features a double zero (00) on its roulette wheel. As a result, the house edge is increased to 5.26%, and the numbers are arranged differently on the roulette wheel and table. Apart from call bets, American roulette players can make the same bets as in European roulette.
European roulette is the most popular variation of the game and only has a single 0 on its wheel and table, making the house edge 2.7%. In addition to the roulette table, gamblers can also make call bets on the European roulette wheel.
This roulette game uses the single 0 and European roulette wheel, which means it has the same house edge. On a French roulette table, outside bets are split between the two long sides of the board. Bet types are the same as European roulette but also include 'En Prison' and 'La Partage' wagers. These insurance bets on even money wagers mean that if the ball stops on zero, a player will only lose half their wagered amount.
Using a European roulette wheel and table, multi-ball roulette adds as many as 10 balls at once. This increases the number of betting options players can make, making it an exciting and modern update to the classic roulette format.
Few online casinos offer this scaled-back version of roulette. Only half the size of a regular roulette table and with fewer betting options, it's a good game for new gamblers that feel daunted by regular roulette.
Players will find the same rules and format as European roulette, with the addition of a progressive jackpot bet. Alongside their main bet, a player can make a second wager on inside or outside bets, or singular numbers. To win the progressive jackpot bet, the number the player chooses must land five times in a row.
Like multi-ball roulette, multi-wheel roulette follows the same rules and set-up as European Roulette.
Live Dealer Roulette
Players can enjoy the energy and thrill of roulette games online in the comfort of their own homes. The house edge, bet types and rules will be the same in live dealer online roulette games as those in land casinos. While these appear less often on casino sites, the best online casinos for roulette will offer live dealer games.
Roulette Betting Tips
Betting on roulette is both varied and exciting, with over 20 different types of bets available to make. There is a betting window which is effectively closed by the croupier declaring 'no more bets' and any bets made after this will be void.
Inside and outside bets are the two main types of bets you can make, with a range of bets within these categories with varying payouts and odds. How to Play Roulette at a Land-Based Casino?
Playing roulette online is extremely similar as at a land-based casino, especially if you're playing live dealer roulette. Some differences include the more prominent use of call bets, which are announced to the dealer rather than placed. These are usually only accepted as higher-stakes tables and naturally less common online.

If you do end up playing at a brick and mortar casino, remember to 'color up'. We sat down with Heather Ferris from Vegas Aces, who has some very interesting advice for roulette players in casinos.
Once the player has finished, they'll grab their roulette chips and walk off the table looking for another game to play. When those roulette chips are taken off the table they become completely worthless and cannot be exchanged for cash or cheques. That's why the customers must color up before leaving the table.
How many numbers in roulette?
There are 38 numbers in American Roulette, including the double zero. In European Roulette there is no 00, so are 37 numbers in total.
How does roulette work?
Roulette works by players placing bets on the roulette table and the dealer spinning the roulette wheel one way and the ball in the opposite direction. Whichever number the ball lands on determines which bets win or lose.
