About Call of Duty

The first Call of Duty game was released all the way back in 2003 and, along with Halo, represented one of the multiplayer experiences that defined gaming in the early '00s.

Since then 15 other games (including Modern Warfare and Black Ops) have been added to the series, with more than 250 million copies worth $15 billion sold to date. In recent years, with the exception of Call of Duty: WWII in 2017, the franchise has focused primarily on present-day combat.

The series has been part of the eSports scene since 2006 but has really picked up steam since the Call of Duty: Experience 2011 tournament, a massive endeavor that took place just less than a decade ago.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare, developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, is the most recent title in the COD series and (as its name implies) focuses heavily on realistic and modern conflict. A little confusingly, the game is also a reboot of a previous series by the same developers and publishers that was also called Modern Warfare.

It's highly likely that anything you read about Call of Duty gambling in 2020 refers to this latest version of Modern Warfare that was released in 2019, or potentially its battle royale offshoot that's known as Warzone. The 12 team Call of Duty League, for example, currently plays Modern Warfare exclusively.

COD Game Modes

Although Modern Warfare has a huge variety of game modes, from 3v3 and 6v6 to the epic 64 player Ground War, most of these are not used in competitive play.

The three game modes that are used in tournament and exhibition play are Hardpoint, Search & Destroy and Domination. These game modes are all similar in that they involve securing or defending objectives, but the logistics of each one differs slightly:

Hardpoint:

Hardpoint icon

Players rush to secure a certain area of the map and repel approaching enemies. When members of one team occupy the hardpoint uncontested, they score points. Respawning is enabled in this game mode.

Search & Destroy:

In this mode, one team must attempt to place a bomb at one of two bomb sites. The other team defends those sites and must attempt to defuse any bomb that is activated. Respawning is disabled, with players receiving just one life per round.

Domination:

Each team attempts to secure and "own" at least three control points on the map. The more control points are owned, the more points are accrued as time passes. Respawning is enabled and there is no time limit.

In competitive play all of the action takes place across seven maps, with some maps available across multiple game modes and others tied to just one. The comparatively small number of game modes and maps involved in COD eSports is a good thing for new bettors, because it means that getting started isn't too overwhelming.

Call of Duty eSports

Despite the fact that COD is also available on Xbox One and PC, most of the action that's relevant to eSports takes place on PS4. For example, the Call of Duty League (CDL) is played exclusively on Sony's console and not on PC like Overwatch League is.

Perhaps this makes sense since, with more than 4.75 million digital units sold in 2019 alone, Modern Warfare was the year's best-selling digital title on console but only the sixth on PC. For anyone looking to bet on COD, the CDL is undoubtedly the place to start.

There are, however, many more amateur events (and we can't forget about the Call of Duty Championship!) that take place throughout the year and will let you continue to hone your COD betting skills.

How We Rate the Best COD Betting Sites

We've reviewed the best Call of Duty betting sites, so you don't have to. However, if you're looking to bet real money on the CDL or other COD events, it's important to know what to expect from the best sites.

Banking Options

Not only should deposits and withdrawals be simple and quick, but you should also be provided with options when depositing. Most top sites will allow you to deposit using credit/debit cards, prepaid cards, e-wallets and Bitcoin. Banking Options

Licensing and Reputation

COD Wagers & Bets

The range of markets available for COD betting differs from site to site, with some offering only a few key outright bets while other specialist bookmakers allow many more Call of Duty bets both on the outcome and not. As you get more experienced, however, you'll see the following types time and time again:

Match/Series Winner
Match/Series Winner

Place a bet on a certain team to win a match or an entire tournament, just like you'd do for an outright bet on a football or baseball game.

Map Bets
Map Bets

From betting on a team to win at least one map through to their performance on a certain map, you can make various bets based around the arenas in which games play out.

Over/Under
Over/Under

Various over/under bets are available in online betting, Call of Duty being no exception. Wager on everything from the combined total of kills across a match to the number of rounds it will take a team to win.

Handicap
Handicap

Some bookies will allow you to make a Call of Duty bet that takes a handicap into account. For example, they might give an underdog a 1 map lead to make betting on the match fairer and more appealing.

Prop Bets
Prop Bets

Most sports have a range of prop bets available that don't depend on the game's outcome. That's true in eSports too, and here you can bet on everything from the highest scoring player to the person who will get the first kill of the match.

Live Betting
Live Betting

As a game develops, the things you can bet on will change. For example, if two teams are all tied up then you can no longer bet that one of them will go undefeated. You will, however, be able to bet on which one will break the tie and take home the win.

Call of Duty Betting Tips

Getting started with betting on Call of Duty might seem intimidating if you're not a gamer or have never thought about placing wagers on other people playing video games. Read our tips below to give yourself an advantage the next time you bet on COD:

  • 1

    Research the teams

It's very unlikely that you'd bet on a football team without reading up on their star quarterback. The same should be true here, and you should always watch out for notable absences or anything else that might affect team dynamics.

  • 2

    Maps and game type matter

COD has a wide range of maps and game modes (including Search & Destroy, Domination and Hardpoint) available. Certain players and teams have play styles that are just better suited to particular maps or game types.

  • 3

    Use bonuses and promotions

If you're able to secure promotions or bonus cash to use when betting on Call of Duty, doing so is a no-brainer. It gives you the chance to build up your bankroll and/or place slightly riskier bets without the need to open up your wallet.

  • 4

    Watch before betting

You don't need to be an absolute expert on the game before you wager on it, but it's absolutely worth watching a few matches before you start wagering real cash. If your instincts on who's going to win keep proving right, you're probably ready to bet!

  • 5

    Compare Odds

In this case, it pays to shop around. Different sites set their odds independently, and you may stumble across one that gives you much better odds on certain outcomes than others. As long as the site is safe and reputable, it makes sense to place your bets there.

Call of Duty eSports Events

The two biggest events in the eSports calendar that relate to COD are the Call of Duty League Playoffs – culminating in a CDL COD Championship Bracket – and the Call of Duty World League Championship, which is commonly referred to as "Champs".

The former of these is, as we've mentioned above, played exclusively on PlayStation 4. The latter, however, was played on Xbox consoles in Call of Duty World Championships between 2013 and 2015 but has been played on PS4 for the last 4 years.

Major events in the COD CDL schedule include Launch Weekend – which took place at the end of January 2020 – and the Playoffs, which will take place after the season concludes at the end of July.

It's likely that, unless COVID-19 allows otherwise, the Championship Bracket will take place exclusively online sometime in August or September of this year.

Warzone Wednesday

After seeing the popularity of games like PUBG and Fortnite, it was probably only a matter of time before Call of Duty tried to capitalize on the battle royale format. They just did that in March 2020 with the launch of Call of Duty: Warzone.

The game is still in its infancy so there isn't a huge amount of betting action to take advantage of just yet. KEEMSTAR's weekly Warzone Wednesdays are one notable exception to this, and it's very likely that other tournaments and official events will follow soon.

FAQs

  • How to watch Call of Duty League?

In 2020 and likely beyond that, Call of Duty League is being broadcast exclusively on YouTube. Where possible, we may see Call of Duty gambling sites and other eSports bookies mirroring that action via embedded media players.

  • When does the new Call of Duty come out?

At the time of writing, information about the next new Call of Duty game is pretty vague. Activision usually announce their plans for additions to the series in May, but that hasn't been the case yet. Rumors suggest that the game will be based around the Vietnam War.

  • How many Call of Duty games are there?

The short answer to this is that there are 16 games in the Call of Duty series, but there are various other remastered titles, add-ons and pieces of DLC that might lead some people to claim that this number is higher than 20.
