With two stellar Kentucky Derby preps and the iconic Santa Anita Handicap headlining 15 stakes races Saturday, Santa Anita Park and Gulfstream Park joined forces through their parent 1/ST Racing to create a massive race day for bettors.
In what 1/ST Racing officials called “1/ST Saturday,” the two Stronach-owned tracks put together a combined card offering nine stakes races (eight graded) from Gulfstream and six from Santa Anita. That card includes three Grade 1s: the Santa Anita Handicap, Frank E. Kilroe Mile and Beholder Mile — all at Santa Anita. The day features a combined $4.15 million in stakes purses.
It also includes two of the best Grade 2 Derby preps in the country: the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita and the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream. Both $400,000 races are essentially “win and you’re in” preps, offering 50-20-10-5 Derby points to its top four finishers.
The tracks offer two Coast-to-Coast Pick 5s, one for dirt and one for turf. Both Pick 5s come with a 12% takeout and a $1 minimum.
1/ST Racing puts $5 million up for grabs; just pick 15 stakes winners
Along with that, 1/ST Racing tests horseplayers’ handicapping abilities as it tempts them with a $5 million prize. All you have to do is pick the winners of all 15 stakes races at the two tracks. The person with the most winners short of all 15 wins a VIP trip to the 2022 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
Then, there is the 1/ST Racing Ultimate Betting Challenge. This live-money tournament comes with a $3,500 buy-in and a $25,000 seeded prize pool. Players compete for a $75,000 cash pool and entry into handicapping tournaments for the rest of 2022.
