The 2021 Tour de France will begin on time this year. Stage 1 begins June 26 in Brest, Brittany. Stage 21 ends the race in Paris on July 18. The 2021 Tour de France heads to the Alps on its second weekend before reaching the Pyrenees in the third week.

Alaphilippe best French hope?

With Slovenia dominating the Tour de France last year, does a French cyclist finally have a chance to win Le Tour for the first time since the Badger won in 1985? Julian Alaphilippe inspired a new generation of cycling enthusiasts over the last few years. He led Le Tour in both 2019 and 2020, but couldn’t retain the yellow jersey before one of the big climbers caught him.

Alaphilippe is the highest French rider on the futures board at +3300 odds. Keep an eye out for Alaphilippe in Stage 8; it’s the same location where he notched his first-ever stage victory with a breakaway victory at Le Grand Bornand in 2018, which includes ascents at Col de Romme and Col de la Colombiere.

In Stage 19, this year’s riders will have a grueling climb to the top of the historic Col du Tourmalet. The final time trial occurs in the next-to-last Stage 20, which takes the peloton through the picturesque vineyards of the Bordeaux region.

Bernal wins Giro d’Italia

Oddsmakers took Egan Bernal (Ineos) off the board after he won the Giro d’Italia last week. Bernal secured the Corsa Rosa, which is the rose-colored champion’s jersey.

Bernal, the 2019 Tour de France winner, said he was going to focus on riding in the Vuelta a Espana this August. The Vuelta, Spain’s version of the Tour de France, is one of three prestigious Grand Tour races. Bernal has won two out of three Grand Tours and is focused on winning the third at Vuelta.

Bernal was one of the top five favorites on the futures board at +400 odds prior to his Giro victory. He dropped out of the 2020 Tour de France due to a back injury and never finished Le Tour after he cracked in the Alps.
