Skiing bettors and regular followers of this space may have woken up to a pleasant surprise, as American Ryan Cochran-Siegle celebrated his 101st World Cup start by topping the podium for the first time in his career on Tuesday.

The Vermont native continued his impressive run through the early season World Cup speed events as he took the top spot in decisive fashion with the season’s most dominant run in the Bormio super-G.

Son of Olympian Posts Largest Margin of Victory in Super-G in Half-Decade

Cochran-Siegle ended a 14-year American drought in Bormio. The son of 1972 Olympic slalom champion Barbara Cochran finished 0.79 over Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr — the largest margin of victory in the super-G in five seasons.

The 28-year-old also became the first US man to win a World Cup super-G since Bode Miller in 2006

The victory comes in the wake of Cochran-Siegle’s first career podium in Val Gardena last week, where he took second in the downhill.

Vermont Native Crushes Middle of the Course, Cruises to Win

Cochran-Siegle attacked the middle portion of the course like no other skier, guaranteeing victory by the bottom third.

“I was at the limit through the middle part of the course and gained a lot of time there, which let me build up a pretty good gap,” Cochran Siegle said post-race. “Having success in Val Gardena let me have trust in myself and my skiing.”

The podium was rounded off by Norwegian Adrian Smiseth Sejersted, who has skied fast thus far this season. Sejersted earned his first two career podiums less than a month apart, the first coming with a second-place finish at the Val d’Isere super-G.

The post-Christmas races in Bormio have been nothing but unpredictable for the men, who have seen variable weather and multiple race changes.

Wednesday’s downhill in Bormio will be the final race of the year. Initially, the downhill was set for Tuesday, but after the super-G was postponed a day, it was pushed to Wednesday.

Because of his otherworldly fast performance Tuesday, Cochran-Siegle jumped became the odds-on favorite to win the 2020 finale at 7/4 on Unibet. Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is 7/2 and Kriechmayr is 11/2.
