Right on the heels of his impressive Belmont Stakes victory, Tiz the Law’s connections sold his breeding rights to Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud, where he will stand at stud upon his racing retirement. In the meantime, Tiz the Law will continue racing for current owners Sackatoga Stable.

The price was not disclosed.

That means Tiz the Law remains on track for the Aug. 8 Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga, followed by the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby – where he is the +275 favorite at Circa Sports and +250 at William Hill-Nevada. A win there sends Tiz the Law to the Oct. 3 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico with the Triple Crown on the line.

Should Tiz the Law win accomplish that feat, he’ll give Ashford three Triple Crown winners, since American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018) already hold court there. Last year, American Pharoah led his sire class in progeny earnings.

“Tiz the Law is the outstanding colt of his generation, so we are obviously delighted he’ll be coming here,” said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan in a statement. “From day one, when he broke his maiden at Saratoga, we have been watching him closely and he has everything one looks for in a stallion prospect.”

Tiz the Law Comes from Good Breeding

That, of course, includes pedigree. Tiz the Law is the son of Constitution, who currently leads in 2020 second-crop sire earnings with more than $2.4 million. Tiz the Law is responsible for more than $1.1 million of that in his three races. His dam is Grade 2 stakes champion Tizfiz, who hit the board 11 times in 20 races. Trace Tiz the Law’s lineage back five generations on his dam’s side and you find 1977 Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew. Go back two on his sire’s side and you find standout stallion Tapit.

That powerful pedigree partially explains Tiz the Law’s record. After breaking his maiden in his August 2019 debut, Tiz the Law graduated to graded stakes. He captured the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park in October, then suffered his only loss – finishing third in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in the Churchill Downs slop.

This year, Tiz the Law has been untouchable. He swept the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes in February, the Grade 1 Florida Derby in March, and last week’s Belmont Stakes. He’s earned $1,480,300 in his career so far.

Every Horse Owner’s Dream

Sackatoga Stable Managing Partner Jack Knowlton paid $110,000 for Tiz the Law at Fasig-Tipton’s 2018 New York Bred Yearling Sale. With a 1,346% ROI, that’s proven to be a wise investment.

“Tiz the Law is such a pleasure to be around, he impresses me every day with how easy he does everything. Nothing is out of reach for him,” trainer Barclay Tagg said. “I have been training horses for such a long time and I have never had a horse like him. He makes my life very easy. We are looking forward to running him in the Travers, then on to the Derby and Preakness. He has achieved so much already and is a very exciting horse for the future. I wouldn’t change him for the world.”
