Oddsmakers are expecting a high-powered, but close, 2020 Super Bowl with the Chiefs favored by a single point over the 49ers in a game with an over/under of 53.5. If you’re playing Super Bowl showdown in DFS, some players seem like must plays, while some under-the-radar guys can help your lineup stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of winning the top prize.

Patrick Mahomes
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be the key if the Chiefs win the 2020 Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. He figures to be an important player in Super Bowl showdown lineups in DFS. (Image: USA Today Sports)

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB, $12,600 on DK and $16,000 on FD

Mahomes will be very highly owned — perhaps the highest owned played in Super Bowl showdown — but it’s hard to imagine the Kansas City wunderkind not being on the winning team. The 49ers defense is tough, but it’s actually not great against opposing QBs in DFS, ranking a middling 13th in the NFL this year. Mahomes is likely to post numbers somewhere near his average of 25 DFS points per game on Sunday.

Emmanuel Sanders, 49ers WR, $5,200 on DK and $7,500 on FD

Sanders was a ghost in the NFC Championship Game, getting only one target and not catching it in a game in which Jimmy Garoppolo attempted just eight passes. The 49ers ran the ball down the Packers’ throats, a feat unlikely to be duplicated against a Chiefs team that just shut down Derrick Henry. San Francisco’s wide receivers will likely see more targets in the Super Bowl, and I like Sanders over Deebo Samuel because he should be lower owned.

Raheem Mostert, 49ers RB, $9,400 on DK and $13,500 on FD

The previous point being made, the 49ers will still attempt to pound the ball, and Mostert has established himself as the top running back for the team this postseason. He won’t put up 220 yards like he did against Green Bay, but his touches should yield some DFS points and, hopefully, a touchdown or two.

George Kittle, 49ers TE, $8,400 on DK and $11,500 on FD

Kittle has had a slow 2019 postseason, with just four receptions for 35 yards and no touchdowns in two games. I can easily see him coming alive in Super Bowl showdown, especially given that the Chiefs are one of the worst teams in the NFL in defending tight ends, ranking 28th against that position in DFS.

Mecole Hardman, Chiefs WR, $2,200 on DK and $6,000 on FD

Another way to differentiate yourself from the crowd is to draft a lower-tiered Kansas City wide receiver. The focus will be on Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and (after his breakout game last week) Sammy Watkins. But Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman, splitting time at the No. 3, are capable of big games. I’d lean toward Hardman. Robinson has battled an illness this week, so Hardman is likely to see more snaps. Plus, he’s averaging nearly 21 yards per catch and has six touchdowns on just 41 targets this year. He’s a great salary saver who could yield a nice return with just a single TD catch.
