Bettor Wins $62,500 on Michael Thompson’s 3M Open Victory

There were plenty of winners and losers at the 3M Open, but one big victor wasn’t on the golf course. A BetMGM customer made a wager on winner Michael Thompson before the event at 125/1. He put down $500 and, when Thompson won by two strokes on Sunday, he cashed a ticket worth a whopping $62,500.

Thompson was obviously the biggest winner among those who entered the PGA Tour event. His only other victory was at the 2013 Honda Classic — a span of 167 starts. The victory earned the 35-year-old more than a nice paycheck — he also picked up entries to this week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and the US Open.

“Oh, man, it’s job security for two more years,” Thompson told reporters on Sunday. “It’s benefits of the sponsors that I have, and it gives me the confidence to know that I can compete on the biggest stage in the world in this game, and that I can do it again. To have the opportunities to play in some of the bigger tournaments.”

So who else was a winner at the 3M Open? We take a look at those that did well for themselves in Minnesota, and others that came up short.

3M Open Winners

Tony Finau

Finau broke with his longtime caddy this week, and the move might have breathed a little life into his season. He finished tied for third at the 3M Open, shooting four rounds in the 60s.

“It took me a few weeks to just emotionally be competitive and these last couple weeks have proved that I am,” Finau told reporters on Sunday. “Like I said, with these major championships right around the corner, I’m really happy with where my game’s at.”

Charles Howell III

One of the nicest guys in golf joined Finau in a tie for third. It was his highest finish this year, breaking a stretch of two missed cuts and two finishes in the 40s.

“Nice to finally have a nice week coming back from this stuff,” Howell said. “We’ve got a lot of golf coming up, a lot of our stuff got shifted into the fall with being some majors and the FedEx Playoffs, et cetera. Yeah, nice to finally have a good week, it’s been a while.”

Losers

Brooks Koepka

The pre-tournament favorite at 10/1, Koepka shot two rounds in the 70s and missed the cut. It was the second time in the past three events where he didn’t play on the weekend. In the event where he did make the cut, he finished tied for 62nd.

Dustin Johnson

Two weeks after winning the Travelers Championship, Johnson missed his second consecutive weekend. He missed the cut at The Memorial, and then shot a 78 in the first round of the 3M open before withdrawing because of a back injury.

Those recent performances haven’t helped his PGA Championship odds. Johnson’s dropped from 12/1 to 14/1 in two weeks, and on Sunday, the Westgate had him at 20/1.

Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood was once a strong long shot to win a major championship, but the English golfer has been missing in action. The 3M Open was his first event since the PGA Tour resumed, and he missed the cut. Can Fleetwood regain his form before the PGA Championship? Oddsmakers aren’t so sure, putting him at 33/1 to win.
