Scottie Scheffler beat back COVID-19 and now, the PGA Tour’s 2020 Rookie of the Year is ready to inflict some damage at the Sanderson Farms Championship. The 24-year-old is the 9/1 favorite to win the event, held at the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi.

Scheffler, who was a 40/1 pick to win the US Open, was forced to withdraw from the major championship when he tested positive for COVID-19. He told reporters Wednesday at the Sanderson Farms Championship that getting over COVID might have been easier than missing the major championship.

“It definitely stunk sitting at home all week watching the US Open, especially the way I was playing leading into it,” Scheffler said. “I felt like I had a good chance of winning. It stunk, but it’s the world we live in. I felt OK, so very blessed to have felt good though all of it and came out on the other side recovered, so all good.”

Scheffler will make his 2020-2021 season debut at the Sanderson Farms Championship, and said he wants to continue his strong play from the summer where he had three top-5 finishes in his last four tournaments, including a fifth-place finish at the Tour Championship.

“I felt like I had a really solid rookie season,”Scheffler said. “If you had told me that was going to be my results going in, I would have been pleased. I would have liked to have had a win last year, but I feel like that’s coming on the horizon, and the game feels like it’s in a good spot, for sure.”

Redman Running Hot

Doc Redman, who is an attractive pick at 33/1, has been on a tear as of late. He finished tied for third at the Wyndham Championship in August, and was tied for third at the Safeway Open last week.

Redman said after his high finish at the Safeway Open, he made some adjustments to his swing.

“I didn’t feel like I was getting off my right side very well and then I just had a lot of tension in my left arm and my left hand,” Redman said. “Just tried to loosen it up a little and I was able to hit it a little more solid.”

Zalatoris Bouncing Back after US Open

Zalatoris finished tied for sixth at the US Open two weeks ago, and admitted he was “gassed” after the major championship. He might have given a hint as to how he will play at the Sanderson Farms Championship when he shot 65 on the final round of last week’s Corales Puntacana Championship.

The 24-year-old finished eighth at that tournament, despite shooting in the 70s in the first three rounds. Look for Zalatoris to be around the top of the leaderboard this week.
