Bayern Munich recorded their second Bundesliga defeat this season after losing away in Augsburg on Friday. Mads Pedersen and Andre Hahn got Augsburg flying with their goals. Robert Lewandowski was on the scoresheet for Bayern, but the Pole’s effort wasn’t enough.

Pedersen opened the scoring after 23 minutes, then Hahn made it 2-0 for the home side in the 35th minute. Lewandowski netted moments after for Bayern (’38), as the Bavarian giants kept pushing in vain for the remainder of the game. The Munich powerhouse failed to put seven points between them and second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who could now come one point behind if they beat Stuttgart at home on Saturday afternoon (15:30 CET).

Thanks to their first home victory against Bayern since 2014, Augsburg have now moved out of the relegation zone at least for 24 hours, also affecting their Bavarian rivals at Bayern in their attempt of escaping to another sole title race. Bayern have won the last nine Bundesliga titles and plan to celebrate 10 in a row next summer.

Bayern have a defensive problem away from home

Augsburg have now beaten Bayern three times in the Bundesliga, with Markus Weinzierl being their coach on each occasion. For Mads Pedersen, the opener against Bayern was his first Bundesliga goal, coming from his seventh ever shot towards the net. Bayern, although still comfortable as leaders, couldn’t keep a clean sheet in any of their previous nine away outings.

Despite assisting Robert Lewandowski for his goal, Thomas Muller couldn’t celebrate his 600th competitive appearance in the Bayern shirt as he dreamed to. Lewandowski netted his 14th goal this season in the German top flight, having scored three more than Augsburg’s entire team since the start of the campaign.

Bayern will now travel to Kyiv to play Dynamo in the Champions League on Tuesday. Bayern have secured qualification to the knock-out stages, winning the four games they played so far in Group E. They scored an impressive 17 goals in the process, conceding just two. Their Champions League run this season included the 3-0 trashing of FC Barcelona at Camp Nou.

In Kyiv, Bayern are hot favorites for a win at -455. A draw sits at +500, while a home win stands at +1,100.
