Bears’ Season May Be Over Before it Begins

This is the Bears’ second scratch in a row and the second aborted effort to kick off their Pac-12 season.

The Pac-12 made the announcement Friday morning, and the game will be recorded as a no-contest. The matchup is the 13th game canceled in the last 72 hours and the 60th of the season as a historic weak of scratches continues.

“The Pac-12 has canceled the Cal at Arizona State football game scheduled for Nov. 14,” a released statement said Friday morning. “This decision was made under the Pac-12’s football game cancelation policy due to Arizona State not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a number of positive football student-athlete COVID-19 cases and resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols,”

Last-Ditch Make-up and Schedule in Flux

At this point, the program’s return to the gridiron this season is in jeopardy even before it begins unless Cal can pull a last-minute scheduling coup. There is a chance that Cal could try for a Sunday reschedule of their week-one matchup vs. Washington, and school officials said no options are off the table to reboot the season.

Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports reported a long-shot Sunday matchup between the two programs if Washington’s tilt on Saturday vs. Oregon State is canceled because of the Beavers’ COVID-19 outbreak
