Stud Poker

Stud poker was probably the most popular poker variant before the texas holdem poker boom of recent times.

Unlike texas holdem & omaha, stud is not a community game, and there is no 'flop'. Players are dealt a certain number of cards both face up and face down, and there are no cards to be shared by everyone.

Online Stud Poker Games

Seven Card Stud
Traditionally, the most popular format for online stud poker games is seven card stud. Players are dealt two cards face down, then four cards face up, then finally one more card face down. The object is to make the best 5 card hand from the seven cards dealt. Betting is usually in the limit format. Compulsory antes are paid before the hand is dealt and the player with the lowest card showing starts the betting with what is known as the 'bring in' bet.

Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo
Also known as seven stud eights or better, players actually play for two pots - the high and the low. To qualify for the low, a player must have 87654 or lower, hence why the game is sometimes called '8 or better'. If there is no qualifying low hand, the high hand takes the pot.

The object of Razz is to make the lowest possible hand from the seven cards dealt. Straights and flushes do not count in Razz. The best possible Razz hand is 5-4-3-2-A, or 'The Wheel'. Razz can be played at most online poker rooms.

Five Card Stud
As played in the famous poker movie, 'The Cincinnati Kid', five card stud is very similar to seven card stud, except of course only five cards are dealt to each player. It is thought to have originated during the American civil war. Five card stud is a little rare online.
