Last week’s top pick, Bryson DeChambeau, dominated the weekend, winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic by three strokes to secure his first victory of the season. After a dominating stretch, DeChambeau will take this week off as the tour hits Murfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, for the first of two consecutive weeks in the age of the coronavirus pandemic. Up first is the Workday Charity Open, with the course playing 7,456 yards and a par of 72. This event replaces the John Deere Classic and will see five of the top 10 golfers in the world tee it up on Thursday.
Let’s look at some DFS picks for this event:
Patrick Cantlay ($10,600 on DraftKings, $11,700 on FanDuel)
Patrick Cantlay is Memorial Tournament’s defending champion. That puts him in good stead this week, since the Workday is playing on the same course. Cantlay is coming in fresh, having only played the Travelers Championship since the tour’s return from suspension. He finished 11th there, just missing his third top 10 in a season in which he’s made the cut in all eight events that he’s played. Cantlay excels in strokes gained on approach and from tee to green, ranking in the top 10 in both metrics. He’s the closest to a sure thing for a high finish this week at the Workday Charity Open as DeChambeau was last week.
Colin Morikawa ($9,200 on DraftKings, $10,600 on FanDuel)
This week’s salary provides your chance to scoop up Morikawa at a bargain price, given his incredible stats on the year – 13 of 14 made cuts and four top 10s. That lone missed cut (after 22 consecutive made cuts to start his career) occurred two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship. He didn’t play last week, meaning he may be under-owned in DFS this week.
Scottie Scheffler ($7,800 on DraftKings, $9,500 on FanDuel)
Recency bias may play in our favor with Scheffler, too. Last week, he clanged his way to an opening-round 79 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but then shot a lights-out 65 in round two. It wasn’t enough to recover and make the cut, but it was his fifth round shooting under 70 in eight rounds of play since the tour resumed.
Brian Stuard ($7,100 on DraftKings, $8,700 on FanDuel)
Stuard has been Mr. Consistent for the past four weeks, with finishes of 43, 52, 20, and 30. His final round numbers all four weeks certainly stand out, with scores of 64, 67, 68, and 68. If Stuard can improve his Thursday and Friday numbers at the Workday Charity Open, he could compete for the win on a bargain salary.
Troy Merritt ($7,000 on DraftKings, $8,400 on FanDuel)
Merritt has been on a roll lately, with three straight cuts capped by a tie for eighth last week. He’s also shown nice course history by finishing 17th last year at the Memorial. If he can stem the loss of strokes tee to green we could see another high finish by Merritt at the Workday Charity Open this weekend.
