Even though Bryson DeChambeau is the 6/1 favorite to win this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, the Detroit Golf Club doesn’t appear to be a good fit for him. The Donald Ross-style golf course features tight, tree-lined fairways, which could hinder the tour’s No. 2 leader in driving distance.

Hold on, says DeChambeau. He grew up on a similar golf course, and told reporters on Tuesday he enjoys playing this type of layout.

“We’re going to see what it produces for me,” DeChambeau said. “But again, being able to hit an 8-iron 195 yards is a pretty good asset, I’d say. So even though it limits my driving capabilities, my irons are going to be a lot shorter going into the greens no matter what club I have in, yardage I have in.”

Also, no player has been more consistent than DeChambeau since the PGA Tour’s restart. He’s finished tied for third, eighth, and sixth in the past three tournaments. DeChambeau considers that to be another plus for him.

“I think that my iron play and driving has been pretty good the past three weeks,” DeChambeau said. “Obviously, Colonial and RBC I felt like my driving was really good. Last week wasn’t as good as I thought.”

So who else has a chance to win this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic? We take a look at some of the contenders we like, and others we aren’t so crazy about.

Golfers to Consider

Webb Simpson 11/1

Mr. Consistent is back after a week off following a COVID-19 scare. He tested negative and should pick up where he left off. He won the RBC Heritage on a similar golf course and should be in the mix on Sunday.

Can he get his third win of the year? We’ll see, but he seems like good value at 11/1.

Patrick Reed 16/1

Reed’s had a sporadic record since the restart. He finished tied for seventh at Charles Schwab Challenge, but missed the cut the following week. He was tied for 24th at Travelers last week.

What we like about Reed, though, is that he finished tied for fifth at last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Viktor Hovland 20/1

This is our long-shot choice for this week. Hovland has improved in every tournament he’s played in since the restart. Last week, he tied for 11th. The second-year pro finished tied for 13th at this event last year.

Hovland’s had some struggles with his putting this year, but we think that could change this week.

Golfers to Avoid

Tyrell Hatton 16/1

Hatton has been the darling of bettors this week, but we aren’t really sure why. He finished tied for third at the RBC Heritage two weeks ago, but that’s the only event he’s played since the restart. Besides, he’s never played this event.

Hideki Matsuyama 18/1

Matuyama is another player we believe is vastly overvalued this week. In his only tournament in three months, he missed the cut at the RBC Heritage. Now, he’s at 18/1 to win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which features similar course conditions to Harbour Town. We can’t see him doing well this week, even though he finished tied for 13th here last year.
