After a second-place finish in Le Runs, Roglic took over first place in the GC and secured the yellow jersey for the first time in Le Tour.

Earlier in the week, Roglic won Stage 4 with a sensational performance at the summit finish in Orcieres-Merlett.

Heading into the rest day, 166 riders remain on Le Tour. During Stage 9, two riders did not finish — Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates) and Steff Cras (Lotto Soudal).

The entire Tour de France bubble, approximately 650 people in all, will be tested for COVID-19 during the first rest day. They were tested twice in Nice before Le Tour began to rule out any false positives. Officials use a PCR test that produces results within two hours.

Back-to-Back Bernal?

Egan Bernal won last year’s Tour de France. He made history as the first rider from Colombia to win Le Tour. At 22, he became the youngest rider to win the Tour de France since World War II.

Bernal entered the 2020 Tour de France as one of the favorites. Ineos had full confidence in him and shuffled their team shortly before the start of Le Tour in Nice. Ineos dropped former champs, Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome, from this year’s roster.

Bernal sits in second place overall in the GC, but he’s third overall in odds behind Roglic. Bernal trails by 21 seconds.

“I’m doing what is best for me,” said Bernal. “That is to try to go day by day, recover, and strive to do my best in every stage.”

Bernal will be waiting to pick his spot in the coming week.

“It depends on the legs,” explained Bernal. “The plan is just to wait until the right moment. You need to feel it. You need to look at the others and then, when it’s the correct moment, you can just go and make a big difference on a good day.”

French Long Shots: Martin, Bardet

No Frenchman has won the Tour de France since the Badger. The legendary Bernard Hinault won his fourth Le Tour in 1985, which marked the last time anyone from France arrived in Paris at the end of the race as the champion.

Two French riders are in the top 4 in the GC. Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) sits in third place, while fourth-place Romain Bardet (ALM) trails the leader by 30 seconds. Martin is 50/1 odds to win Le Tour, while Bardet is now 66/1 odds.

Julian Alaphilippe, the fan-favorite from last summer’s Tour de France, struggled during Stage 9 and tumbled to 38th place. He’s in a deep hole and trailing Roglic by 41:17.

LE TOUR GC STANDINGS THRU STAGE 9
  1.  Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) 38:40:01
  2. Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) +00:00:21
  3. Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) +00:00:28
  4. Romain Bardet (ALM) +00:00:30
  5. Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) +00:00:32
  6. Rigoberto Uran (EF Pro Cycling) +00:00:32
  7. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) +00:00:44
  8. Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) +00:01:02
  9. Miguel Angel Lopez Moreno (Astana) +00:01:15
  10. Mikel Landa Meana (Bahrain McLaren) +00:01:42

Alaphilippe rode to a triumphant victory at Stage 2 and snagged the yellow jersey on the second day of the 2020 Tour de France. He retained it for a couple of stages before he coughed it up to Adam Yates due to a rules infraction. Officials penalized Alaphilippe 20 seconds for illegal feeding during Stage 5 approaching Privas.

After back-to-back disappointing stages in the Pyrenees, Alaphilippe saw his odds to win Le Tour drop to 600/1.
