So you’ve made the choice, and know who you think will win the PGA Championship. But what’s that, you have some money left over? Fear not, loyal bettor, because OG has a bevy of proposition wagers that are sure to cover your 100/1 pick of Ollie Schniederjans to win the 100th running of this major tournament.
With the popularity of golf betting on the rise, sportsbooks have put player group wagers, top players against the field, and prop bets galore on the boards — like winning score, and whether or not there will be a hole in one.
Paddy Power even has a bet that there will be an ace and the tournament goes into a playoff. At 5/1, however, OG can’t in good conscience encourage you to take that longshot. But some of the fun golf props you might want to consider:
Players Worth a Gamble
The first round in a major usually presents a surprise. A player who won’t be anywhere near the leaderboard on Sunday will put up a good round early in the week. Zander Lombard shot a 65 at the Open Championship this year and was one stroke behind the leader, Kevin Kisner. He finished tied for 67th after shooting a final round 82.
So who will be the Thursday shocker at the Bellerive Country Club ball? How about Adam Hadwin at 150/1. He finished tied for third after the first round of the Masters. Don’t want to be so daring? Then perhaps try Rickie Fowler at 35/1.
Another bet we like is a prop on Fowler and Rory McIlroy to finish in the top 5. The odds are 22/1 and worth taking a chance on for a nice payout.
A little less speculative way to go is by betting player matchups. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has put together golfers of similar skill with odds on how they’ll fare against each another heads up. One we like is Brooks Koepka vs. Francesco Molinari, who is even money to finish higher than Koepka.
Another pairing worth a look: Louis Oosthuizen vs. Thomas Pieters. They both finished tied for 28th at the Open Championship, but Pieters may have the better game for this event. Plus he is a +145.
Favorable Tournament Longshots
Holes-in-one are always a popular bet, but the odds for an ace during the four rounds is a paltry 4/5. Instead look at if there to be a hole in one in the first round. Those odds are much better at 6/1. If you’re feeling extremely daring, wager on whether or not a player will get a double eagle. That pays 20/1.
Winning margin is another good place where you can often find value. Winning by a stroke is 5/2, while a two-shot victory is 4/1. With the conditions for scoring favorable this week, we like the three-stroke victory at 11/2.
If you believe golfers will be scoring, the +135 for 267 and under is a good bet. A safer route is 268-271 at +185.
An intriguing wager is how many players will finish under par. Twenty and under at +215 is a good way to go, but hedging your bet with another one on 21-27 with red numbers at +240 would make sense as well.
