Norwich City won 2-1 in London against Brentford, but that wasn’t enough to keep manager Daniel Farke in charge. The German was sacked following Norwich’s first league victory this season.

Farke was told about being let go by the club at the end of his press conference at Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday evening. Assistant coach Edmund Riemer, first-team coach Christopher John and head of performance Chris Domogalla have also been sacked.

Steve Weaver, the current head of development, will be looking after the first-team squad until a new permanent coach is appointed. According to The Athletic, the club hope to decide the future of the technical bench in the next two weeks, during the international break and before their home game against Southampton on 20 November.

“Norwich City can confirm that head coach Daniel Farke has left the club with immediate effect,” the club said through a statement.

“Daniel departs Carrow Road having overseen 208 competitive games at the helm across a four-and-a-half-year spell,” the press release adds.

“I know how determined Daniel and his staff were to succeed at this level, but we feel that now is the right time for a change to give ourselves the best opportunity of retaining our Premier League status,” sporting director Stuart Webber commented.

“All at Norwich City should be forever grateful to Daniel and his staff for the significant role they have played in our journey. They helped deliver two Championship titles, many memorable moments and they all fully bought into our philosophy and what it means to be part of this football club,” Webber pointed out.

“It’s important that we now look forward. We have 27 league games remaining and a long way to go in the current season. We know we have the ability within our playing squad and staff to start picking up points and climbing the league table,” the official stated.

Farke won Norwich two Premier League promotions in three years

Norwich are currently second from bottom in the Premier League table, having won five points from 11 games. They have the worst record for goals scored and conceded, with their goal difference now at -21.

Daniel Farke, 45, was appointed in April 2017, when he joined from Borussia Dortmund‘s second team to replace Alex Neil. Farke got Norwich promoted to the Premier League in his second season as manager, winning the Championship. Under him, Norwich couldn’t retain Premier League status, but got immediately promoted back, again as champions in the Championship.

In October, Norwich were trashed 7-0 by Chelsea in one of the most painful defeats in the club’s history. The team is now five points away from safety.
