By winning Oaklawn Park’s Temperence Hill Stakes on Saturday, 47/1 longshot Carlos L produced one single winner in Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5. That winning ticket earned its lucky and savvy holder a healthy $108,475 payoff from the regular Saturday multi-track, multi-race wager.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 incorporated three races from Oaklawn and two from Aqueduct. That sequence changes weekly, but always includes a New York Racing Association (NYRA) track.

It was the fifth and final race of the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence cashing this ticket. Carlos L went off at 47/1 in the Black-Type Temperence Hill Stakes, Oaklawn’s ninth race. Not only did Carlos L prevail, paying $97.30 for a $2 bet, but he set Oaklawn’s 1 ½-mile track record. The Alex Canchari-trained 5-year-old covered the 10 furlongs in 2:29.87. He won his seventh career race with a career-best 106 Equibase Speed Figure.

One favorite prevailed in Cross Country Pick 5

Oaklawn’s Listed Stakes Essex Handicap began the Cross Country Pick 5 on a more predictable front. Silver State, the 2/1 favorite, seized command in the stretch. He held off surging R Rated Superstar for a neck victory that paid a modest $4.40. It was Silver State’s second victory in as many 2021 starts.

The Cross Country Pick 5 moved east to Aqueduct where 6/1 Mihos moved into the winner’s circle with a 1 ¼-length victory in the 6 ½-furlong allowance optional claiming race. He paid $14.40.

Another solid payday came in the third race of the sequence. That came from 8/1 Special Reserve, who captured the 6 ½-furlong allowance optional claiming race at Oaklawn by two lengths. With Florent Geroux aboard, Special Reserve paid $18.20.

Sadie Lady makes 5-year-old debut a winning one

The fourth Cross Country Pick 5 race took bettors back to Aqueduct for that track’s Saturday feature – the Black-Type Correction Stakes. Again, favorites took a back seat to 5/1 Sadie Lady. The 5-year-old mare brought trainer Rob Atras his fourth victory of the day, jockey Manny Franco his third, and bettors a $13 ticket to cash.

The Cross Country Pick 5 takes place every Saturday with a minimum bet of 50 cents and a 15% takeout. It is available at open tracks on advance deposit wagering (ADW) apps, and at open simulcast facilities.
