DeChambeau, Thomas Co-Favorites at The Northern Trust

The Northern Trust is the first of three tournaments making up the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and the top 125 golfers on the points list will be playing this week. Justin Thomas is the FedEx Cup points leader going into The Northern Trust, but he isn’t alone as the favorite to win this week.

Several sportsbooks also list Bryson DeChambeau as a top pick. Both golfers are at 12/1 to win the first event of the playoffs.

DeChambeau won at TPC Boston in 2018 when this golf course was last utilized for the playoffs, and he told reporters on Tuesday that he thinks he has an edge coming into Thursday’s event.

“TPC Boston is an amazing place,” DeChambeau said. “I have a lot of great memories from there, playing with Tiger, playing well with him, and just honestly winning back-to-back was something I never dreamed I’d do, and [I was] very fortunate to be able to do that, complete that, and come back here on good terms.”

So who will triumph this week at The Northern Trust? We have some thoughts about those players we think could win, and others who don’t have much of a chance.

Golfers to Consider at The Northern Trust

Bryson DeChambeau (12/1)

Golf’s mad scientist is playing well since the tour’s restart, and told reporters on Tuesday he may have figured out why he’s been so wayward off the tee as of late. If the 26-year-old has solved that problem, then he should be a force at The Northern Trust.

If he can keep the ball in the fairway, coupled with the fact that he won here in 2018, he could be near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

Dustin Johnson (18/1)

Back problems were a concern for Johnson a month ago, but it appears he’s bounced back from that ailment. He finished tied for second at the PGA Championship, and won the Travelers Championship at the end of June.

When the tour was here in 2018, Johnson finished tied for seventh.

Golfers to Avoid

Collin Morikawa (20/1)

The PGA Championship winner is a popular pick, but we don’t share the same enthusiasm for the 23-year-old. Remember he had strong familiarity at Harding Park, where the PGA was recently held.

He hasn’t played at TPC Boston as a professional, and there might be a learning curve. We’re not sure he’s worth the risk on an unfamiliar course under these circumstances.

Patrick Reed (28/1)

Reed is the defending champion of The Northern Trust, but that was at Liberty National last year. At TPC Boston in 2018, Reed finished tied for 35th.

Reed does have two top-20 finishes in his last two events, so he may be able to build on that momentum, but we’re going to shy away from him.
