Going Bowling in College Football DFS: SMU & Florida Atlantic Look to Smash

Bowl season is finally upon us, with a healthy slate of six games on Saturday. While these teams are far from the illustrious elite, they should provide plenty of fireworks for DFS purposes — especially in the Cheribundi Boca Raton and Camellia bowls. Here are some players to watch.

Quarterbacks

Shane Buechele, SMU ($7,700 on DraftKings, $10,500 on FanDuel) – Buechele has been the catalyst for a high-scoring Mustangs offense, and they’re expected to keep things humming against Florida Atlantic in the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl, with an implied team total of 36, highest on the slate. Buechele has been strong late in the season, with three games greater than 35 DFS points on DK in his last six.

Shai Werts, Georgia Southern ($6,500 on DK, $7,900 on FD) – Werts leads the Eagles’ triple-option attack against Liberty in the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. He barely averages double-digit passes per game, but Werts is reliable on the ground, averaging 80 yards per game. Liberty’s defense is poor against both the pass and the run, and Vegas expects Georgia Southern to score 31 points on Saturday.

Running backs

Chase Jasmin, San Diego State ($4,400 on DK, $6,300 on FD) – Starter Juwan Washington has been suffering a nagging ankle injury and is not expected to play, which opens the door for Jasmin – last year’s starter – to get many more carries against Central Michigan in the New Mexico Bowl. The game has a low over/under of 41, but at this price, you don’t need a multi-touchdown game to get good value.

Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State ($7,400 on DK, $10,000 on FD) – Evans has been on a roll lately, averaging nearly 33 DFS points per game on DK over his last four outings. He’s scored 11 touchdowns by both land and air during that span. Although UAB has a decent rushing defense, expect Evans to get his touches and points in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Wide receivers

Omar Bayless, Arkansas State ($8,100 on DK, $9,900 on FD) – Yes, his salary is up there, but Bayless is worth it, as the Red Wolves’ offense focuses on the dynamic wide receiver. He has an incredible stat line of 84 receptions for 1,481 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season. Although Florida International has been sneaky good against opposing wideouts in DFS, the team hasn’t faced a player of this caliber. Oddsmakers expect Arkansas State to put up 32 points in the Camellia Bowl, and you’ve got to figure Bayless will be an integral part of that scoring.

Deangelo Antoine, Florida Atlantic ($5,800 on DK, $7,400 on FD) – The 2019 season has been very up and down for the Owls’ receiver, with some monster games (11 catches for 173 yards and four TDs against Wagner), and a share of clunkers (two receptions for 37 yards against Southern Miss). For his affordable salary, I like Antoine’s potential to break the slate, especially against a poor SMU defense in that Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl that could turn into a track meet.
