Carlos Correa, the shortstop for the Houston Astros, fractured his rib during a home massage and the Astros placed him on the 10-day IL, but he’s expected to miss four to six weeks of action.
Although it’s not quite as severe as the Yankees and their Bronx ER, the Astros are in the middle of a rash of injuries.
Correa’s injury comes a couple of days after the Astros placed one of their star players on the IL. Slugger George Springer, who led the American League with 17 home runs, is out with a hamstring injury after he made an awkward slide chasing down a foul ball.
Houston also got bad news from Jose Altuve. The heart and soul of the Astros had knee surgery in October. He returned to the lineup for 39 games before he went on the IL with a hamstring injury.
While rehabbing his hammy, Altuve complained about pain in his knee after a pair of games in the minor leagues. Altuve’s return has been pushed back indefinitely.
Altuve was hitting only .243 when he went down, with 9 HR and 21 RBI.
Even with the injuries, the Astros are tied for the most wins in baseball with 37. The Astros (37-20) lead the AL West by 7.5 games and they boast one of the best home records in MLB.

Carlos Correa, 24, is the former 2015 Rookie of the Year in the American League. During the year that Houston won the World Series in 2017, Correa hit a career-high .315 and 24 home runs. He also drove in 84 RBI that season.
Through 50 games this year, Correa was hitting .295 with 11 HR and 35 RBI.
Injuries do not always happen on the field. Earlier this season, Tampa Bay’s ace Blake Snell dropped a lamp and fractured his toe. Snell’s freak accident happened while getting out of the shower at home.
Correa apparently got a home massage that was a little too rough. It resulted in a fractured rib.
“I’m extremely disappointed about not being on the field with my teammates,” said Correa. “To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating. However, I will work hard to get back on the field as quickly as possible to help our team achieve our goal of winning another championship.”
“It’s frustrating and it’s not typically how people get injured,” said general manager Jeff Luhnow. “But we’re going to hope the healing process progresses quickly and he’ll be back out here.
The Astros recalled minor leaguer Myles Straw from AAA Round Rock. Straw is an outfielder and short stop, who was leading his team in stolen bases.
According to the South Point Casino and Sports Book, the Houston Astros are 4/1 favorites to win the 2019 World Series. The Chicago Cubs are also high on the board as 6/1 odds to win the World Series.
