Kun Aguero was substituted just before half-time in FC Barcelona’s 1-1 home draw against Alaves at the weekend. The Argentine suffered from chest pain and club doctors didn’t hesitate when they asked an ambulance to take him immediately to the hospital for a complete medical examination.

Following their investigations from the past 48 hours, the doctors have decided that 33-year-old Aguero needs to take a break from professional football. He will spend at least three months away from the first team duties at FC Barcelona, the club formally announced on Monday evening.

“Barça player Kun Agüero has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr. Josep Brugada. He is unavailable for selection and, during the next three months, the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process,” Barcelona said.

Aguero turned millions to panic mode as he was seen holding his chest and breathing heavily during the Alaves match at Camp Nou. The striker could walk off the pitch on his feet, but was taken by ambulance to the hospital for a thorough check-up just minutes after.

Aguero took to Twitter to send his first message after the events on Saturday. “I feel fine and I am eagerly waiting to start the rehabilitation process,” he wrote.

“I want to thank you all for the many messages supporting me and for the love you’ve shown me. It makes my heart stronger today,” Aguero added.

Barcelona’s caretaker boss, Sergi Barjuan, said Aguero was “calm”, despite all the uncertainty around him. Aguero hasn’t left the hospital and is still receiving treatment.

“I talked to him on Whatsapp and he’s calm. He’s confined to his room but considering the situation he’s calm,” Barjuan said in his press conference in Kyiv, where Barcelona will play Dynamo in the Champions League on Tuesday.

It’s a vital game for the Blaugrana, as they only sit third in their group, with three points from three games, six behind Bayern Munich and one less than Benfica Lisbon. Barcelona was trashed 3-0 by both Bayern and Benfica this season.

Aguero, limited to just foyr Barça outings so far

According to Marca, Aguero suffers from arrhythmia, a problem with the rhythm of his heartbeats.

Doctor Salvador Alvarez Anton, the chief cardiologist at the Hospital Gomez Ulla in Madrid, told El Pardidazo that Aguero’s treatment has an 80% chance of being effective.

“He needs to rest. He can do some small exercise, but not by any means compete at the highest level right now,” doctor Alvarez Anton explained.

Aguero had only returned to action on 17 October, in Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Valencia. Kun had been unavailable due to injury since the start of the campaign.

The Argentine moved to FC Barcelona last summer on a free transfer. Aguero finished his contract with Manchester City at the end of last season.

In his four La Liga outings in the Barcelona shirt so far, Aguero netted once, in the 2-1 El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid on 24 October.
