Wimbledon Round 2 Preview

Staff Writer
June 23, 2009

The opening round of Wimbledon is over and there have already been some intriguing results. BetUS has posted odds on Round 2 matchups.

As expected, Roger Federer cruised through his first round in straight sets and is clear favorite to take out the tournament as world number one Rafael Nadal recovers from a knee injury. Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray also progressed to the next round of The Championships with comfortable victories.

But the opening round also claimed some big names. Marat Safin and James Blake lost out to Jesse Levine and Andreas Seppi, respectively, marking Blake’s second consecutive first round loss in a Grand Slam. The world number seventeen will have to impress at the US Open or he can expect his ranking to drop sharply before the year is out.

In the Women’s draw it was a similar situation. Top seed Dinara Safina breezed through her match in straight sets, as did sisters Venus and Serena Williams, crushing their opponents in just over an hour. Some big names fell too, though, with Aleksandra Wozniak and Patty Schnyder having to wait until next year for their chance to take out a Wimbledon title.

The second round of the tournament looks to be boasting some great matches, and BetUS has posted odds on all of Wednesday’s fixtures. Some of the best matchups include:

Gentlemen’s Singles

Mardy Fish (28): -170
Janko Tipsarevic: +130

Tommy Robredo (15): -800
Stefan Koubek: +425

Tommy Haas (24): -350
Michael Llodra: +225

Guillermo Garcia Lopez: +2000
Roger Federer (2): -20000

Ladies’ Singles

Maria Sharapova (24): -500
Gisela Dulko: +300

Jie Zheng (16): -130
Daniela Hantuchova: -110

Shahar Peer: +300
Nadia Petrova (10): -500

Jarmila Groth: +1000
Serena Williams (2): -3000

It is still early days at Wimbledon and we can expect to see many more top seeds fall in the coming week. The biggest question on everyone’s lips, though, is will Dinara Safina face off against Serena Williams in the final? The world number one has yet to win a Grand Slam but has come frustratingly close in the previous two, finishing Runner-up against Williams at the Australian Open, and again at Roland Garros behind Svetlana Kuznetsova. Venus Williams will be keen to defend her title after taking out Wimbledon last year, but will face some stiff competition along the way.

In the Men’s draw, Roger Federer has to be clear favorite to take out the title, especially with the marked absence of 2008 winner Rafael Nadal. Swede Robin Soderling will be keen to backup after his remarkable effort of advancing to the final of the French Open earlier this month; however, recent results at Wimbledon leave a lot to be desired. But if there is one man that British fans will want to see lift The Championships trophy, it is Andy Murray. The world number three is looking for his first ever Grand Slam title and will be hoping to achieve that at Wimbledon, where it has been 73 years since the last Brit, Fred Perry, won.

Be sure to check back at BetUS regularly as they will be posting odds for each match on a daily basis. There are some great wagers available, especially considering so many big names have already been eliminated. If you feel that Roger Federer will be the next to go, head on over to BetUS to take a look at the odds on offer
