Week Two in Wimbledon

Staff Writer
June 28, 2009

Week One finished up at Wimbledon with a surprise or two.  The action isn’t over yet and BetUS is offering odds on all of Week Two’s matches.

The biggest surprises of Week One came courtesy of the Ladies’ Singles.  Maria Sharapova was knocked out of contention by Gisela Dulko in Round 2.  However, the biggest upset came on Saturday with American upstart Melanie Oudin beating former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-2.  Jankovic seemed to be struggling with the heat, taking a 12 minute break after the first set in which a trainer and doctor were called in to check her pulse and blood pressure.  She rested for several minutes before sitting up to ice down her neck and midsection.  Despite her recuperation time, Jankovic didn’t fair any better in the second set and Oudin turned the match after overcoming a 5-4 deficit.

Oudin advanced to the fourth round with the likes of the Williams sisters who have both been performing quite well so far.  Serena made quick work of her match against Roberta Vinci on Friday, and Venus easily ousted Carla Suarez Navarro in a 6-0, 6-2 win on Saturday.  Dinara Safina is also in the final 16 after a 7-5, 6-1 win over Kirsten Flipkens.

With this group advancing to the fourth round on the women’s side, there are going to be a couple of great matchups to start off Week Two.  Be sure to check out the face off between Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic.  As mentioned, Venus has been playing well, but Ivanovic has insisted that she is playing the best tennis of her career.  The face off between these two former world number ones should be interesting as each are definitely going to bring their best game to the table.  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Venus Williams v Ana Ivanovic

Game Hcp
Williams: -4 ½ -115
Ivanovic:  +4 ½ -125

Moneyline
Williams: -500
Ivanovic: +300

You’ll also want to watch out for Dinara Safina and Amelie Mauresmo.  This centre court matchup should be a good one for Safina fans.  Her playing thus far has been strong and consistent.  If she can keep it up and keep her nerves in check, she’s likely to make it all the way to the final round.  Now is the time when the competition starts to heat up and this match between the Russian No. 1 and Mauresmo (ranked No. 17) will see if Safina can deal with the mounting pressure. BetUS is offering the following odds:

Dinara Safina v Amelie Mauresmo

Game Hcp
Safina: -3 ½ -105
Mauresmo: +3 ½ -135

Moneyline
Safina: -170
Mauresmo: +130

Despite the exit of Raphael Nadal, the Gentlemen’s Singles have been pretty entertaining to watch.  Roger Federer continues his campaign for his 15th Grand Slam title, only dropping one set along the way.  The No. 2 seed seems to be a shoo-in for the finals, but the question still remains who will he face for the title?

There has been a resurgence of old favorites as 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt and American Andy Roddick continue to outplay their opponents.  Both have joined the final 16.  Also in the ranks is Andy Murray who, like Federer, has only dropped one set in the tournament so far.  Tommy Haas and Novak Djokovic have also advanced to the fourth round.  With the cream slowly rising to the top, Week Two will certainly give us some excellent matchups on the men’s side.

Be sure to watch Roger Federer face off against his French Open rival Robin Soderling.  In the ten encounters between these two competitors, Federer has yet to lose.  However, Soderling did have a pretty impressive performance in the French Open after becoming the only man to defeat Nadal at Roland Garros.  He played fantastically on the clay courts but he prefers grass.  Soderling carries a powerful hit, which could be a huge advantage for the Swede.  But history is on Federer’s side.  This will certainly be an interesting repeat of the French Open final.  Will Soderling be able to pull off the upset?  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Robin Soderling v Roger Federer

Game Hcp
Soderling: +6 ½ -125
Federer: -6 ½ -115

Moneyline
Soderling: +900
Federer: -2500

British favorite Andy Murray will also be kicking off Week Two in centre court with a match against Stanislas Wawrinka.  These two are friends and frequent practice partners, which could produce an interesting game.  However, don’t think for a second that Murray is going to let all of this change his approach to the game.  He’s happy with his performance in the first week and rightly so.  The Scot is playing well and as mentioned has only dropped one set in the first half of the tournament.  Wawrinka has a great all around game and, being a practice partner of Murray’s, might have a little insight into his game.  BetUS is offering the following odds:

Andy Murray v Stanislas Wawrinka

Game Hcp
Murray: -7 -105
Wawrinka: +7 -135

Moneyline
Murray: -2000
Wawrinka: +800

Week Two gets underway on Monday, June 29.  Be sure to double check BetUS for the odds on every player in the final 16.  They are also currently offering several props on Monday’s matchups.  Check it out to put down a last minute wager on Wimbledon 2009.
