UFC 109 Preview

Shad
February 1, 2010

UFC 109 will see UFC legends Randy Couture and Mark Coleman face off on Saturday February 6th in Las Vegas. BetUS has odds.

UFC 109

Randy Couture needs no introduction to even casual MMA fans. Former heavyweight champion and light heavyweight champion, Couture comes from a strong wrestling background and his mastery of dirty boxing has brought him much success in the Octagon. Despite being 46-years-old, Couture recently defeated the much younger Brandon Vera in a razor thin decision. BetUS has Couture at -400, which may be a bit too short thanks to the massive fan support for Couture.

Mark Coleman has been part of MMA for even longer than Couture, and his early fights brought him much success. He is considered the father of ground-and-pound technique, and Coleman’s wrestling style won him the UFC 10 and 11 tournaments, as well as the first UFC heavyweight title. At the height of his career, he won the 2000 Pride Openweight GP, though this marked the end of his glory days. Since that time, Coleman has generally lost to elite competition, though he can still dominate middle tier fighters and should be very competitive against an older Couture. BetUS has given him odds of +300 to win this fight.

This bout will be all about the wrestling match-up, as Couture is primarily a Greco-Roman wrestler and Coleman a freestyle wrestler. Couture’s clinching is incredibly good, and he has a knack for sticking to his opponents and wearing them down. This has not been all that effective against some of his recent younger opponents, but Coleman has shown that his cardio is not that of a young man. Couture has also apparently been training in catch wrestling, which suggests he intends to stay on top and then finish with a submission from there. It’s not a bad plan, as when two exceptional wrestlers go up against one another, it often all comes down to who can establish top control first.

Two more veterans will be facing off at UFC 109. Matt Serra and Frank Trigg have been mouthing off for a couple of months now, and they’ll finally be fighting on Saturday. Serra held the welterweight title for a very short time, and a victory over Georges St. Pierre is no mean feat even if it is avenged. Frank Trigg, on the other hand, has had consistent success in his career over some very tough competition, but he’s never been able to take a major title. BetUS calls this bout at -135 Serra to +105 Trigg. While Trigg might manage to squeak out a win if he can take down Serra and stay on top, Serra’s guard game is incredibly dangerous and his stand-up is better than Trigg’s. This really is a close one to call, but Serra should have the edge.

The full odds on offer at BetUS for UFC 109 are:
