Champions League - Round 5

November 23, 2009
With only two matches left to play in the group stage, plenty of clubs in the Champions League need to take a win if they are to have any chance of contending for a round two berth. BetUS has posted odds on every game.
Maccabi Haifa, Atletico Madrid, APOEL, and Debrecen have already had their dreams shattered, and will now be playing for nothing more than pride.
With so much at stake this Tuesday and Wednesday, let’s take a look at the best matches on offer.
Barcelona: -135
Draw: +240
Inter Milan: +360
Barcelona vs. Inter: The reigning European champions have found themselves in an unlikely position leading up to match day five. A shock loss at home against Rubin Kazan was followed up by a goalless draw in Russia, which has seen the club slump to third in Group F. They have to be considered favorites for Tuesday’s match against Inter, but the Italians have already proven that they can keep a clean sheet against Barca.
Inter may consider themselves fortunate to be sitting atop their group; they have only managed a single win from four matches, with three draws to accompany it. Their group couldn’t be any closer, as only two points separate first from last, so taking all three points at the Nou Camp will be at the forefront of Jose Murinho’s thoughts.
Debrecen: +850
Draw: +375
Liverpool: -300
Debrecen vs. Liverpool: Without a point and with nothing else to play for, Debrecen are an enigma in terms of what they will bring to the table. Liverpool are in desperate need of three points, but the Hungarian outfit won’t be too keen to give that to them at the expense of a home defeat. They are certainly long odds to win, but with the form Liverpool has been in of late, it’s certainly not impossible.
Liverpool seem to be a completely different team to the successful club of 2008-09. Their league and European form has dipped, and failure to win in Hungary will see them eliminated from the Champions League. It’s a far cry from their miraculous Champions League victory of 2005, but an easy win is exactly what the Reds will be hoping for on Tuesday.
AC Milan: -105
Draw: +225
Marseille: +300
AC Milan vs. Marseille: One of the most exciting groups this season guarantees us yet another exhilarating game of football. With only a single point separating these two teams, a win for either of them would put them in the driver’s seat for progression. AC Milan may have defeated Real Madrid unexpectedly, but their form in other matches has been far from consistent. A win at home is predicted, and if they can pull it off, then they must consider themselves a shoe-in for round two.
Marseille may only be a point behind, but they have all the work to do. Facing AC Milan away from home, and then hosting Real Madrid will be no easy task, but the French club are more than capable of competing with the big teams. While they don’t necessarily need all three points to stay in contention, they can’t afford a loss, which could see them eliminated from the tournament if Madrid defeat Zurich on Wednesday.
Bordeaux: +175
Draw: +220
Juventus: +150
Bordeaux vs. Juventus: One of the hardest matches to call all week will be played between Bordeaux and Juventus. The French giants have surprised everyone by cruising through the group stage undefeated so far. To guarantee their spot in the next round they will need at least a draw, but Bayern Munich will be hoping for a Bordeaux win.
If Juventus take all three points in France on Wednesday it will be them, not Bordeaux, who will be able to rest easy for the final group match. A win for the Italians would put them at the top of Group A, and force Bayern Munich to make two big wins in order for them to have a chance in the knockout stages.
BetUS has posted odds on every other Champions League game being played this Tuesday and Wednesday (24-25 Nov), so be sure to keep updated with the latest odds, and make a wager on your favorite club.
