MMA Popular Bets
As with almost all other competitive professional sports, many fans place bets on MMA bouts. This can enhance the excitement of a bout and even be quite profitable for players who choose their fighters well. Many of the bets that can be placed on MMA bouts are similar to those that can be placed on other combat sports, such as boxing. The wider variety of outcomes on MMA bouts can allow for some unique betting options, however.
The most common bet that can be made on an MMA bout is to choose the winner. Odds are usually given in a +/- format. Bets with a – before them payout a dollar per the amount given being bet, bets with a + before them payout that amount per dollar bet. For example, a fighter with odds that are -160 would pay out a dollar for each $1.60 being bet. A fighter with odds of +244 would pay out $2.44 per dollar bet.
Most of the major sports betting sites will only give straight up win betting options, but it can be possible to find more specific bets that offer higher or just different odds. The one most likely to be found at a major sports betting site would be an over/under bet, better known as a totals bet. In such a bet, a set time that the fight is expected to go for will be posted, and bettors are given odds on whether the fight will be over or under that time.
Another bet you might find for an MMA event is a parlay bet. This requires you to place a bet on the outcome of multiple fights. The odds are higher, but the risk to reward can work out in your favor, especially if it allows you to bet on favorites who might otherwise prove to be a poor investment.
MMA is quite new to many online sports bookmakers, so it is currently unusual to find any other kinds of bet. Other bets may be available at MMA venues or other sports bookmakers. These can include betting on the nature of a fight’s outcome. For instance, a bet could be placed on whether a fighter will win by submission, knockout or judges’ decision, or even on the technique used to end a fight. This kind of betting is exceptionally rare to find, though, as working out odds for such bets can be very difficult and they are nowhere near as popular as bets on straight up wins.
Be careful not to overvalue reputation when placing MMA bets. Some fighters can be past their prime and yet still other bettors will favor them due to their previous record. Remember, do not just look at the numerical record of a fighter when judging how they’ll do. A long winning streak from a champion who is pushing forty may simply be hiding the fact that he only barely won those fights and was fighting far less experienced opponents. You will often find that betting and winning on underdog bets serves you more than wagering on favorites all the time.
Also, be sure not to overvalue the striker’s chance. This is the chance that a single lucky punch will knockout an otherwise superior opponent. While such upsets do happen, many people just expect too much from the striker’s chance. It’s just the possibility of a lucky shot – fight strategies based on it are notoriously unsuccessful.
