2014/2015 San Antonio Spurs Schedule

The defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs will tip off the 2014-15 season on Oct. 28 at the AT&T Center vs. the Dallas Mavericks. As part of the NBA's Christmas Day schedule, the Spurs will host the Oklahoma City Thunder at the AT&T Center on Dec. 25 for their first matchup of the season. The Silver and Black will host the Miami Heat on Feb. 6 in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals. The Spurs will also face the Heat in Miami on March 31. The Spurs are the only major professional sporting franchise based in San Antonio so Spurs tickets are always extremely popular.

San Antonio Spurs History

The Spurs franchise was founded as the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967 and joined the NBA as the San Antonio Spurs in 1976 after the ABA-NBA merger. The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, having won the NBA Championship on five occasions. The Spurs quickly became a force in the NBA and were regular playoff qualifiers in the late 1970s and 1980s. The franchise struggled in the late 1980s but became a contender again when they acquired David Robinson. The Spurs were consistent playoff contender in the 1990s but an injury to Robinson during the 1996/1997 NBA schedule saw them finish with a poor record and receive the number one draft pick for the 1997 NBA draft. San Antonio selected Tim Duncan who has taken the franchise to unprecedented levels. Duncan led the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Championship in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014. The Spurs have made the playoffs in twenty-four of the last twenty-five seasons and are the most consistent franchise in the NBA.

San Antonio Spurs Star Player: Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan was selected with the first overall pick of the 1997 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Since that time he has been one of the best and most consistent players in the history of the NBA and is considered one of the greatest power forwards in the history of basketball. Duncan wasted no time making an impact on the NBA; winning the Rookie of the Year award and being selected for the NBA All-Star game in his first season in the league. Since 1998 he has been selected as an NBA All-Star fourteen times and is the only player in NBA history to be selected in both the All-NBA and All-NBA Defensive teams in his first thirteen seasons in the NBA. Duncan has led the San Antonio Spurs to five NBA Championships and seventeen consecutive playoff appearances. Duncan has shown no signs of slowing down and will be keen to lead the Spurs to holding their title for the second consecutive year.

San Antonio Spurs Star From the Past: David Robinson

David Robinson was selected with the first overall pick of the 1987 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson served in the Navy for two years and did not make his NBA debut until 1989. He made up for lost time taking the NBA by storm in his rookie season winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award in the process. Robinson quickly became the franchise player for the Spurs and led the side to eight straight playoff appearances and won the NBA MVP Award in 1995. Robinson missed the majority of the 1996/1997 NBA schedule with injury but returned the next season to form a partnership with Tim Duncan. Robinson and Duncan led the San Antonio Spurs to the 1999 NBA Championship and in Robinson's final season in the league added a second title. Robinson is considered one of the greatest centers in the history of the NBA and was selected in the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team.

San Antonio Spurs Head Coach: Gregg Popovich

Gregg Popovich is one of the most successful coaches in NBA history. Popovich became head coach of the San Antonio Spurs in 1996 and is now the longest serving coach in the NBA. In his time in charge of the Spurs the side has missed the playoffs on just one occasion and has won five NBA Championships. He has been named NBA All-Star Game head coach three times and in 2003, 2012, and 2014 was voted NBA Coach of the Year. Popovich's combination with Tim Duncan is one of the most successful player-coach relationships in the history of the NBA and Popovich would dearly love to hold onto their NBA Championship title in 2014 with back-to-back wins.
