2014/2015 New Orleans Pelicans Schedule

The New Orleans Pelicans will open the 2014-15 season with two consecutive homes games at the Smoothie King Center before playing their first road contest on November 3 at Memphis. The Pelicans will host the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs on Dec. 26, and will close out the season against the Spurs on Apr. 15. A highly anticipated matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers takes place on Dec. 12. The Pelicans will play Southwest Division rivals (Dallas, Houston, Memphis and San Antonio) four times each (twice at home/twice on the road). New Orleans Pelicans tickets have not been particularly popular in recent seasons and will be hoping to win more games to improve crowd numbers.

New Orleans Pelicans History

The New Orleans Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in 2002 due to the relocation of the Charlotte Hornets after spending 1988-2002 based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the franchise temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City, where they spent two seasons officially known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. The team returned to New Orleans full-time in 2007. The franchise's name was changed to the Pelicans at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season. The Charlotte Hornets name, history and records from 1988-2002 were returned to its original city to be used by the then-Charlotte Bobcats franchise, in May 2014. Before the start of the 2011/2012 NBA season the franchise traded star player Chris Paul to the LA Clippers and the side struggled. However, the Pelicans now have a strong young roster and will be hoping they can be more competitive in the 2014/215 NBA season along with their new name.

New Orleans Pelicans Star Player: Eric Gordon

Eric Gordon was selected with the seventh overall pick of the 2008 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. Gordon had an immediate impact for the LA Clippers and instantly became one of their leading scorers. Gordon wasn't as effective during the 2009/2010 NBA season but returned to top form in the 2010/2011 season and averaged over twenty points per game. Gordon was traded to the Pelicans along with two other players for Chris Paul but had his season ruined by injury. He returned the following season and became the Pelican's leading scorer for the season with 17.0 points per game, 1.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in 42 games played.

New Orleans Pelicans Star From the Past: Chris Paul

Paul was selected with the fourth overall draft pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2005 NBA Draft. Paul finished the season leading all rookies in points, assists, steals, and double-doubles, and became only the second rookie in NBA history to lead the league in total steals. With final averages of 16.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 2.2 steals per game, he was named Rookie of the Year, falling just one vote shy of winning the award unanimously. Paul was selected to his first All-Star Game in the 2007-08 season and led the NBA in assists and steals, finishing second in MVP voting but making his first All-NBA and All-Defensive teams. While Paul had many individual accomplishments, New Orleans as a team faltered. Fearing Paul would leave in free agency, the team set up a trade with the LA Clippers to ensure they got adequate compensation.

New Orleans Pelicans Head Coach: Monty Williams

Monty Williams was named head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2010 after serving as an assistant coach at the Portland Trail Blazers for five seasons. Williams led the Pelicans to the playoffs in his first season in charge and the side lost to the LA Lakers in the first round. Williams had to completely overhaul the Pelicans offense after Chris Paul was traded to the LA Clippers before the start of the 2011/2012 NBA schedule and the side struggled to a losing record. Williams is one of the youngest head coaches in the NBA and is hoping he can turn the young Pelicans roster into a playoff contender.
