Buffalo Bills


The Buffalo Bills were a founding member of the American Football League (AFL) and joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Bills have the equal longest Super Bowl winning drought in the NFL. They are the only team that has played in four consecutive Super Bowls (1990-1993) but lost all four times. The Bills have struggled in recent seasons and are the only team that hasn't qualified for the playoffs in the 21st century.

Miami Dolphins


The Miami Dolphins entered the AFL in 1966 and joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Dolphins are the only NFL team to complete a perfect season when, in 1972, they won all their regular season and playoff games culminating with victory in Super Bowl VII. They came back the next year to win back to back Super Bowls becoming just the second AFC team to do so. Miami have been inconsistent in recent season making the playoffs just once (2008) in the last ten years.

New England Patriots


The New England Patriots are three time Super Bowl Champions and the most successful franchise of the 21st century. The Patriots were originally known as the Boston Patriots but changed their name after relocating in 1971. They didn't win their first Super Bowl until 2001 but since that time have won two more. They are third overall in Super Bowl appearances with seven. The Patriots have dominated the AFC East winning eight of the ten division titles since the realignment in 2002.

New York Jets


The New York Jets play their games in New Jersey but represent the New York metropolitan area. The franchise was an original member of the AFL and joined the NFL as part of AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Jets won their first and only Super Bowl in 1968. Since that time they have not qualified for the Super Bowl again, the second longest drought in the NFL. The Jets have competitive in recent years qualifying for the AFC Championship game in 2009 and 2010.

Baltimore Ravens


The Baltimore Ravens came into being in a unique way. In 1996 Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell wanted to move his franchise to Baltimore. Subsequent legal actions saw a unique compromise: Modell would be able to keep the Browns' existing players and staff but his team officially would be an entirely new franchise known as the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have been extremely successful in their short history winning the Super Bowl in 2000 and qualifying for the playoffs on eight occasions including the last four seasons.

Cincinnati Bengals


The Cincinnati Bengals were the final team to join the AFL, in 1966, before the merger with the NFL. The Bengals were successful in the 1970's and 1980's qualifying for the Superbowl in 1981 and 1988. Since that time they have struggled with the franchise going 21 years (and counting) without winning a playoff game; the longest drought in the NFL. The Bengals have shown improvement in the 2000's qualifying for the playoffs in 2005, 2009 and 2011.

Cleveland Browns


The Cleveland Browns originated in the now-defunct All-America Football Conference before moving to the NFL in 1950. The Browns were very successful in these early years winning the NFL Championship four times between 1950 and 1964. Since that time the franchise has achieved little success making the playoffs just fifteen times and never appearing in the Super Bowl. The Browns were deactivated from the league in 1996 (after Art Modell tried to move the franchise to Baltimore) but reentered in 1999. They have qualified for the playoffs just once since their reentry.

Pittsburgh Steelers


The Pittsburgh Steelers are the most successful franchise in the history of the NFL, winning the Super Bowl six times. They have also won the most AFC Championships with eight and are equal with the Dallas Cowboys for most Super Bowl appearances. The Steelers entered the NFL in 1933 and were known as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They became the Steelers in 1940. The Steelers have been very successful in the last decade qualifying for the playoffs seven times and winning the Super Bowl twice.

Houston Texans


The Houston Texans are the youngest franchise in the NFL joining the league in 2002. The Texans have not been particularly successful, since joining the league, winning just 65 of their 160 games (the second worst win ratio in the NFL). However, the signs for the future are promising with the Texans winning their first division title and their first playoff game in 2011.

Indianapolis Colts


The Colts franchise entered the NFL in 1953 as the Baltimore Colts. The Baltimore Colts were very successful winning the NFL Championship in 1958, 1959 and 1968 and the Super Bowl in 1970. The franchise relocated to Indianapolis in 1984 and struggled for a short period. However, since the debut of Peyton Manning in 1998, the team qualified for the playoffs eleven times and won the Super Bowl in 2006. Their first season without Manning was a disaster with the Colts finishing bottom of the NFL in 2011.

Jacksonville Jaguars


The Jacksonville Jaguars joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. The franchise did well in its early years qualifying for the playoffs in four of its first five seasons. The Jaguars were never able to convert these playoff appearances into a Super Bowl appearance and are one of four teams never to have played in the Super Bowl. The Jaguars have not had a winning season record since 2007.

Tennessee Titans


The Tennessee Titans entered the AFL as the Houston Oilers in 1960. The Oilers were the inaugural AFL champions in 1960 and defended the title in 1961. The Oilers struggled in the seasons after the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 but recovered to be consistent playoffs qualifiers in the late 1980's and early 1990's. The franchise relocated to Tennessee in 1997 and changed their name to the Titans in 1999. In their first year as Titans the franchise qualified for their only ever Super Bowl. The Titans have been consistent in the last decade, without producing a breakthrough season.

Denver Broncos


The Denver Broncos were a founding member of the AFL and joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL merger. The Broncos have been a consistent franchise, throughout their history, qualifying for the playoffs on eighteen occasions. They have played in six Super Bowls losing in their first four appearances, from 1977-1989 with their defeat to San Francisco at Super Bowl XXIV the most lopsided game in Super Bowl history. The Broncos finally broke their Super Bowl drought; winning back to back titles in 1997 and 1998.The Broncos broke a six season drought to qualify for the playoffs last season.

Kansas City Chiefs


The Kansas City Chiefs entered the AFL as the Dallas Texans before relocating to Kansas City in 1963 and joining the NFL in 1970. From 1960 to 1969, the Chiefs were the most successful franchise in the AFL, winning three league championships. They won their only Super Bowl in 1969; the last Super Bowl played before the merger of the two leagues. The Chiefs struggled after the merger of the leagues with their Super Bowl drought the 4th longest in the league. The Chiefs have not won a playoff game since 1993.

Oakland Raiders


The Oakland Raiders are one of the most popular franchises in NFL history. The franchise won its first AFL Championship in 1967 and continued on a winning path by becoming one of the most successful franchises of the 1970's and 1980's. From 1967-1985 they qualified for the playoffs on fifteen occasions and won the Super Bowl three times. They won the Super Bowl as the Oakland Raiders in 1976 and 1980 and won again in 1983 after relocating to Los Angeles. The franchise moved backed to Oakland in 1995 and has struggled ever since. The Raiders have not made the playoffs since 2002.

San Diego Chargers


The San Diego Chargers entered the AFL as the Los Angeles Chargers before relocating to San Diego in 1961 and joining the NFL in 1970. The Chargers won the AFL Championship in 1963 but have never tasted success in the Super Bowl. The franchise has qualified for the Super Bowl just once in 1994 where they were easily beaten by the San Francisco 49ers. The Chargers qualified for the playoffs four year in a row from 2006 to 2009 but have failed to live up to expectations in the last two seasons.

Dallas Cowboys


The Dallas Cowboys are the most popular and richest team in the NFL. The Cowboys have qualified for the Super Bowl eight times; the most in the NFC and tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most in the entire NFL. They have converted these Super Bowl appearances into five titles winning the Super Bowl in 1971, 1977, 1992, 1993 and 1995. The Cowboys were the dominant team of the 1990's qualifying for the playoffs eight times and winning three Super Bowls. The Cowboys have not reached the Super Bowl in sixteen years the longest drought in franchise history.

New York Giants


The New York Giants entered the NFL in 1925 making them one of the oldest franchises in the competition. The Giants have won eight championships overall; four pre-merger and four post-merger. The franchise was NFL Champions in: 1927, 1934, 1938 and 1956 and Super Bowl Champions in: 1986, 1990, 2007 and 2011. Their most famous Super Bowl win was in 2007 when they defeated the previously undefeated New England Patriots; ruining their perfect season. The Giants are defending Super Bowl champions after, once again, defeating the Patriots in the championship game.

Philadelphia Eagles


The Philadelphia Eagles joined the NFL in 1933. The Eagles have been crowned NFL Champions but are one of seven franchises never to have won the Super Bowl. Philadelphia won the NFL Championship, before the merger, three times in 1948, 1949 and 1960. The franchise has been regular playoff qualifiers, since the AFL-NFL merger, but has reached the Super Bowl only twice losing in 1980 and 2004. Despite this, the Eagles have been very successful in recent seasons qualifying for the playoffs in nine of the last eleven seasons.

Washington Redskins


Since entering the NFL in 1932 the Washington Redskins have experienced great highs as well as great lows. The franchise has had two very successful periods in which they captured all their championships. From 1936 to 1945, the Redskins qualified for the NFL Championship game six times, winning two of them. From 1982 to 1991 the Redskins qualified for the playoffs seven times, won four conference titles and three Super Bowl titles. Since their last Super Bowl in 1991, the Redskins have struggled; qualifying for the playoffs only three times.

Chicago Bears


The Chicago Bears are one of only two franchises left from the inaugural NFL season. The Bears have recorded more victories than any other franchise with 712. They also have the best win ratio, winning .578 of their games. Chicago was the most successful franchise in the pre-merger NFL winning the Championship eight times. Since the merger they have reached the Super Bowl twice; winning in 1985 and losing to the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. The Bears have made the playoffs just three times since the divisional realignment in 2002.

Detroit Lions


The Detroit Lions entered the NFL as the Portsmouth Spartans in 1930 but quickly moved to Detroit in 1934. The Lions had some success in the pre-merger NFL winning the NFL Championship four times. Their last victory came in 1957, which was the last time the franchise appeared in a NFL Championship or Superbowl, the longest drought in the NFL. In 2008, Detroit became the only team to lose all sixteen regular season games. The Lions qualified for the playoffs in 2011 breaking a 12 year drought.

Green Bay Packers


The Green Bay Packers are the third oldest NFL franchise; entering the league in 1919. The Packers are the only 'small town team' remaining in the NFL as well as being the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States. The Packers have won thirteen league championships the most in the NFL. This includes nine NFL championships and four Super Bowl crowns. The Packers won the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967 but had to wait almost thirty years for a third. The team has been very successful in recent years qualifying for the playoffs in eight of the last ten seasons and winning the Super Bowl in 2010.

Minnesota Vikings


The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1961. The Vikings are still looking for their first Super Bowl victory. The franchise qualified for the Super Bowl in: 1969, 1973, 1974 and 1976 but lost on each occasion. It has been a thirty-five year Super Bowl drought for the Vikings; with the side losing AFC Championship games, in 1998 and 2009, in dramatic circumstances. The Vikings finally settled their long-term future earlier this year with the decision to keep the franchise in Minnesota and build a new stadium.

Atlanta Falcons


The Atlanta Falcons entered the NFL as an expansion team in 1965. The franchise has never been particularly successful qualifying for the playoffs on just eleven occasions. The Falcons have played in one Super Bowl losing to the Denver Broncos in 1998. In recent years, the franchise has been one of the best performing teams in the regular season but has struggled to turn this into playoff victories. Despite making the playoffs in three of the last four seasons they haven't won a playoff match since 2004.

Carolina Panthers


The Carolina Panthers joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. The Panthers have had reasonable success since entering the competition but are yet to win a Super Bowl. They went extremely close in 2003 making it all the way to the Super Bowl before being narrowly defeated, 32-29, by the New England Patriots. The Panthers last qualified for the playoffs in 2008.

New Orleans Saints


The New Orleans Saints entered the NFL in 1967 and began struggling almost immediately. It took them twenty years to qualify for the playoffs and another four to win their division for the first time. The team went through another grim period from 1993 to 2005 qualifying for the playoffs just once. In 2006 the Saints signed Drew Brees and the franchise started winning consistently. Brees led the Saints to Super Bowl victory in 2009 bringing joy to a city that had been devastated by Hurricane Katrina just three years earlier. The Saints have built on this Super Bowl victory and become one of the most consistent sides in the NFL.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers


The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the inglorious record of having the worst win ratio in the NFL, winning just 39.5 percent of games. The Buccaneers entered the NFL in 1976 and lost their first 26 games. They had a brief winning period in the 1970's and early 1980's before having fourteen consecutive losing seasons. The franchise broke its playoff drought in 1997 and were consistent playoff qualifiers; breaking through for their maiden Super Bowl in 2002. In 2010 the Buccaneers became the youngest side to have a winning season but were unable to back up that form in 2011.

Arizona Cardinals


The Cardinals franchise, then known as the Chicago Cardinals, was one of the founding members of the NFL in 1920. The franchise moved to St. Louis in 1960 and moved again, this time to Phoenix in 1988. They were renamed the Arizona Cardinals in 1994. Despite their long history the Cardinals have qualified for the playoffs just eight times. They won the NFL Championship in 1925 and 1947 but had to wait until 2008 for a maiden Super Bowl appearance. The 2011 Cardinals have an average season (8-8) but showed remarkable courage and poise to win four games in overtime; a NFL record.

St. Louis Rams


The St Louis Rams are the only franchise to have won championships in three different cities. The franchise entered the NFL in 1935 as the Cleveland Rams and won the NFL Championship in 1945. They moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and subsequently won the NFL Championship in 1951. They moved once again in 1995, this time to St Louis, and once again were rewarded with a championship, winning the Super Bowl in 1999. The Rams qualified for the playoffs five years in a row, from 1999-2004, but have not qualified since then.

San Francisco 49ers


The San Francisco 49ers was a founding member of the All-America Football Conference and joined the NFL when the leagues merged in 1950. The 49ers struggled in their early seasons qualifying for the playoffs just four times before 1980. In the 1980's the 49ers dominated the league winning the Super Bowl on four occasions under head coach Bill Walsh and star quarter-back Joe Montana. The franchise added another Super Bowl in 1994 to give them the equal second most Super Bowl victories. The 49ers broke a nine-year playoff drought last season going all the way to the NFC Championship game.

Seattle Seahawks


The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL in 1976, as part of the NFC, before swapping to the AFC in 1977 and back to the NFC in 2002. Because of this the Seahawks are the only franchise to have played in the both the AFC and NFC Championship game. The Seahawks were regular playoff qualifiers in the 1980's but did not qualify for their first Super Bowl until 2006. In 2010 they became the first team to qualify for the playoffs with a losing record (7-9) and went on to cause on the biggest boil overs in NFL playoff history by beating the New Orleans Saints in the NFC wild card game.
