Caulfield Cup 08

October 16, 2008

The Caulfield Cup, one of Australia's richest horse races is set to be run tomorrow. With Centerbet and Bodog covering the odds, it's a race to bet on!

The race is a handicap like the Melbourne Cup, which means that horses that compete in the Caulfield Cup are capable of running on the first Tuesday of November as well.

The prize money for Saturdays race is $2,500,000 with first place taking home $1,500,00 and trophies. With 2nd place taking $375,000, 3rd $200,000, 4th $110,000 and 5th at $90,000.

Trainer Danny O'Briens Victorian Derby winner Kibbutz is out of Saturdays race due to a hoof abscess, Barbaricus will take his place in the field with lightweight Stephen Baster in the saddle. Lightly raced Barbaricus has yet to be tried beyond the 2000m of last Sunday's Cranbourne Cup, in which he was narrowly beaten.

In a race like such as the Caulfiend Cup, experience counts and a good strategy may be to back the mounts of those jockeys who have won the race before. That narrows it down to 4 horses, Mad Rush, Master O'Reilly, Boundless and Littorio.

The only jockey riding in the cup who has scored multiple wins in the race is Damien Oliver who will be riding Mad Rush, his score of four wins is just one shy of the late Scobie Breasley's record. Oliver's mount, Mad Rush is impeccably bred, being by Belmont Stakes winner Lemon Drop Kid out of a Sadler's Wells mare, and his 2400-metre form is exceptional.

His astute trainer, Luca Cumani, knows which type of horse he needs to be successful over here so the $26 on offer looks very attractive.

With Centerbet and Bodog covering the odds, it's a race to bet on!
