The 2009 Belmont Stakes is to be run this Saturday, 6 June, with Mine That Bird back in the spotlight with Calvin Borel.
With Rachel Alexandra having won a large number of important races in a relatively short time this year, her trainers and owners have decided to keep her out of the Belmont Stakes. This has been foul news to many bettors who placed early bets on her, but it was not entirely unexpected.
The removal of Rachel Alexandra from the Belmont Stakes has catapulted Mine That Bird firmly back into his place as a favorite. Despite some concerns that his winning ways of coming in on the inside may not be as effective in the longer Belmont Stakes, confidence in the colt remains high, as his Preakness Stakes performance proved he had definitely become a contender, even though he isn’t dominant.
As it stands, BetUS is offering futures odds on Mine That Bird of 13/20 to win the Belmont Stakes. Bodog has posted odds of 5/6, and is offering a special $50 bonus on deposits made by OnlineGambling.com readers who sign up with them through one of the Bodog links in this article.
While winning the Belmont Stakes is a noteworthy achievement for any horse, many will be watching a human competitor in this event. Jockey Calvin Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to victory in the Kentucky Derby, and Rachel Alexandra to victory in the Kentucky Oaks and Belmont Stakes, could become the first jockey to ever win all three Triple Crown races without staying on the same mount. Some are dubbing this the Calvin Cup or Calvin Crown, though it seems that should also include winning the Kentucky Oaks in the same year as well. Regardless, many people have been betting on the likelihood of this achievement by Borel, with BetUS offering odds of 13/20 on him pulling it off.
Both Dunkirk and Charitable Man are being picked as possible upsets for the Belmont Stakes. Those who tend to bet on favorites should be mindful of this, as the Belmont Stakes are not unknown for seeing upsets. BetUS has Dunkirk at 3/1 and Charitable Man at 7/2. Bodog has it the other way around, with Charitable Man ahead at 3/1 and Dunkirk at 7/2. Even longer shots such as Chocolate Candy and Flying Private need not be discounted, either, as the length of the Belmont Stakes can be known to challenge favorites that are not paced well.
