Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes is the final leg of the US Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, and you can guess how exciting it is when a Triple Crown contender is in the running. Held at Belmont Park in New York state, the race occurs 3 weeks after the Preakness Stakes and is the longest of the Triple Crown races, at 1 and ½ miles. As with all Triple Crown races, it is run on a left-handed dirt track and only open to 3-year-olds.

Interestingly, the Belmont Stakes is the oldest of the Triple Crown races, having been inaugurated in 1867. Despite this longer history, it sees far less attendance than the previous Triple Crown races in the season and is not quite as prestigious. Nevertheless, it is the ultimate challenge for an aspiring Triple Crown champion, as the longer distance often tests the stamina of lesser horses to breaking point.

This race is known for a particularly impressive performance put in by the legendary horse Secretariat. When Secretariat won the race, he also set the Belmont Stakes track record and the record for the fastest finish of a 1 and ½ mile dirt track, which still stands. It was a phenomenal achievement that won him the Triple Crown and set a standard that may never be beat.

In 2010, the Belmont Stakes will be held on June 5th at its usual venue of Belmont Park. The course can be easily reached via car or public transport, as there are many bus services to Belmont Park, as well as a subway service to Aqueduct Race Course that has a connecting bus service to Belmont.
