Joe Cada Wins Main Event

November 11, 2009
Joe Cada of PokerStars has won the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event by taking down the Maryland logger Darvin Moon.
Going into the last day of the final table with 135,950,000 chips to the 58,850,000 chips held by Darvin Moon, Cada’s eventual win seemed all but guaranteed even before the first hand was dealt. That soon changed, however, when Moon claimed control early on and maintained it to take the chip lead. It all began with a raise of 10 million chips from Moon on a board that read 3 Spades/King Spades/2 Diamonds/Ace Diamonds. Cada called it, and a King Clubs on the river was checked by both parties. The young gun’s pocket 9s fell to the pocket Queens of Darvin Moon, and the tone of the night was established.
Moon was unrelenting and claimed the chip lead by consistently bullying his opponent. Only when Cada managed to break Moon’s momentum did things start to change. In a hand that began with both players moving 3 million in, the flop came down 10 Jacks/5 Diamonds/9 Hearts with the river a 10 Diamonds after both players checked. Cada then moved another 3 million in, and Darvin Moon aggressively went all-in, only to be called by Cada after brief consideration. Cada turned over Jack Hearts/9 Diamonds and Moon revealed 7 Spades/8 Spades. A river card of 3 Hearts gave the hand to Cada, as well as returning him to the chip lead in one fell swoop.
It wasn’t too long after moving ahead that Cada took the entire tournament. Opening once more with 3 million chips, Moon tried to steal back control with a raise to 8 million. Cada wasn’t going to go back to the old dynamic, however, and he soon went all-in. After much consideration, Moon called and Cada revealed pocket 9s that were to go up against the Queen Diamonds/Jack Diamonds of Moon. The flop came down 8 Clubs/2 Clubs/7 Spades, followed by a King Hearts on the turn, leaving Moon to pray for luck on the river. A 7 Clubs did nothing to help Moon, though, and so Joe Cada became the youngest winner of the WSOP Main Event at 21 years of age.
