The Wayne Lukas-trained colt led for the entire race and ended up scoring a fairly comfortable one and three quarter length victory.

“He just kind of steadied after that.

“He always runs hard, but today he never took off.

Trainer Shug McGaughey was clearly disappointed but showed a great deal of class to pay tribute to Lukas’ training effort.

“It was a great opportunity, we were 3-5 and we finished fourth,” McGaughey said.

“Hats off to Wayne, the guy’s a credit to race.”

Lukas is now the most successful trainer in Triple Crown with his fourteenth victory taking him to the outright lead over Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons.

The final leg of the Triple Crown, The Belmont Stakes, takes place on the 8^th of June and it is possible that we will see a rematch between Orb and Oxbow with both trainers hopeful their colts will take part in the race.

”You know me, I like to rack them up in the big events so I’ll probably go,” Lukas said.

Despite Orb’s disappointing performance McGaughey is also keen to press on to Belmont.

“The Belmont Stakes is on our radar screen,” McGaughey said.

”We just all came to the conclusion that we should just watch Orb and see but we’d like to run.”

Orb’s trainer Shug McGaughey has confirmed that his leading galloper will take part in the Preakness Stakes – his first runner in the race since 1989.

Is There Any Horse That Can Beat Him?

Based on the ease of Orb’s Kentucky Derby victory it is hard to see any of the Derby runners improving enough to beat him next Saturday.

A number of the leading pre-race Kentucky Derby contenders like Verrazano and Goldencents were very disappointing and would need to improve by several lengths to have any chance to compete with Orb.

Leading Daily Form analyst Andrew Beyer said it is hard to see Orb getting beaten by any of the other horses backing up from the Derby.

“It is difficult to make a case that any of Orb’s 18 foes might prove to be a better horse under different circumstances,” Beyer wrote in the Washington Post.

“The speed horses were trounced so badly that they were discredited, and Orb was the best of the stretch-runners.

“As Orb aims for the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, he doesn’t appear to have many credible rivals.”

However, there is always the chance that a horse that skipped the Kentucky Derby and is heading to the Preakness Stakes fresh could cause an upset.

One horse that is confirmed to take this route is the Al Stall-trained Departing.

The Illinois Derby winner has excellent acceleration and has a similar racing style to Orb but hasn’t been tested at the top level of racing.

At his best it is going to be very difficult for any other horse to defeat Orb in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday.
