The NFL lockout has finally ended and all it took was a four and a half months of legal banter to ensure that we get a football season.
As one could expect, betting on the NFL has been down during the lockout with bettors unsure if there would even be season to bet on. At a time when gamblers would normally be lining up to back their favourite team for the NFL Super Bowl, playing football was the furthest thing from players and owners minds.
This is the best time of the year to place your Super Bowl Bets for a number of reasons. Firstly, the odds are much more generous than you are likely to receive later in the season when the form of all teams has been exposed. Secondly, the free agency period is not yet over. So teams who are yet to make their announcements over which big name players they have acquired will naturally have higher odds at the moment than they will after they announce their signings.
We take a look at the main contenders in the Bodog Sportsbook Super Bowl markets for the 2011/12 season.
Green Bay Packers (+700)
Last year’s Super Bowl champions are deserved favourites after their stunning run last year. Some said they over-achieved last year, but with Aaron Rodgers having another full season under his belt, the Cheese Heads will take some stopping.
New England Patriots (+700)
The Patriots lost just one game in the regular season last year before busting in the first week of the playoffs against the Jets. Some say they are too old, but the combination of coach Bill Bellichick and start QB Tom Brady is one that cannot be underestimated.
San Diego Chargers (+900)
Missed the playoffs last year despite having a positive record. If the Chargers can maintain their position as the league’s best pass defence they could trouble a lot of teams.
Atlanta Falcons (+1400)
Finished last season as the team with the best record in the NFC, before running into the Packers juggernaut in the playoffs. If Matt Ryan stays fir they are a major contender.
Dallas Cowboys (+1400)
Disappointed last season, winning just six games. Will get Tony Romo back after he missed the bulk of last season through injury. Would be a massive turnaround if they became champions and are so low in the odds because they are always well supported.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+1400)
Went within a whisker last year, and you cannot write off a team who has made three of the last six Super Bowls. They were also the best defensive team in the regular NFL season last year.
Baltimore Ravens (+1600)
Many pundits are tipping the Ravens as rough chances for the Championship and +1600 is a fair gamble about a team whose biggest losing margin last season was 7 points.
New Orleans Saints (+1600)
The Saints chances come down to one man – Drew Brees. If he re-signs they are a chance, if not then 2012 will be a rebuilding season.
New York Jets (+1600)
Fell just short of last year’s Super Bowl and if Mark Sanchez stays healthy they are in with a shot.
Indianapolis Colts (+1800)
You can never write off a champion like Peyton Manning. He carried them in 07 and is capable of doing it again.
New York Giants (+2200)
Will need Eli Manning to greatly improve on last year’s season to be any chance
Chicago Bears (+3300)
Played impressive football in parts last year, but Jay Cutler was just to inconsistent.
Houston Texans (+3300)
Will need to find more offensive punch if they are going to be successful this season.
Nobody ever likes to say a team can’t win, but it would be a major shock if any team currently paying more than +4000 were to get up in the Super Bowl this year. Still anything can happen, just the Saints proved in 2010. That year they were +3300 at the start of the season to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Bodog Sportsbook is currently quoting the other teams in the NFL at over +4000.
