Erik Seidel has been incredibly successful in live tournaments so far this year, his latest achievement a win over Poker Stars Pro Chris Moneymaker in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship.

Seidel’s monster 2011 began in the Caribbean at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure High Roller Event in which he finished fourth for almost $300,000. This was just a warm up, however, for what he was to do in Australia.
The Aussie Millions was practically a bank for Seidel, as he started his dream run there with a third place finish in a high roller event. This grabbed him $618,139 for a buy-in of $100,000. He followed that up with a win in the Aussie Millions Super High Roller event and suddenly found himself $2,472,555 richer.
Seidel hasn’t just called it for the year, though, and he went on to win another big payday in the LA Poker Classic High Roller event for what must have seemed a paltry $144,570 after his bigger early wins.
This latest National Heads-Up Poker Championship win gave Seidel another $750,000 to play with, and he is now at the top of the all-time tournament money list. Many find it controversial that he qualifies for this based on the massive prize money tournaments that he is playing in, and attempts are now being made to adjust how the records record tournament wins.
Our own opinion is that all-time tournament money is a terrible metric for deciding the best poker tournament players. A win in the WSOP Main Event is all it takes to contend for the top all-time money spots, or an incredible run in high stakes events like Erik Seidel is on at the moment. Is there a better method, though? It’s hard to tell, but we’re working on some ideas.
