Devil May Care made trainer Todd Pletcher’s predictions and dreams come true with a fiery winning run in the Mother Goose Stakes.
The $250,000 Grade 1 race, held Saturday July 26th at Belmont Park, saw the three-year-old filly burn up the track on the final furlongs to blow her competition clean out of the way.
From the get-go Pletcher’s charges dominated the track. Katy Now, one of Devil May Care’s stable mates, took the lead as soon as she hit the dirt and started setting an impressive pace for the field. She was followed closely by Connie And Michael from the stables of Dominick Schettino. Three-year-old Connie And Michael was intent on staying with the leader and would not be shaken off. Right on her tail, Devil May Care was biding her time under the direction of jockey John Velazquez. It was not until the final furlongs of the 1 1/16 mile race – which was the perfect length for Pletcher’s favourite girl – when she slowly and determinedly overtook Connie And Michael.
Katy Now, who had been travelling strongly, began to falter under the pressure of not only Devil May Care, but also Connie And Michael and underdog Biofuel, who seemed inspired by the final sprint of her rival and started her own campaign for the lead. However, Devil May Care’s stamina and will to win paid off, allowing her to run to a 1 ¼ lengths victory – and excellent gift for trainer Todd Pletcher’s 43rd birthday.
The Mother Goose Stakes success is the fourth career win for Devil May Care, who has started in seven races as a professional. She was followed closely by Connie And Michael at runner-up and Biofuel as a valiant third place.
As Devil May Care is doing excellently in training and seems at the top of her game when it comes to giving it her all on the track, it is surely only a question of time until we get to see her burn up the racecourse again.
