Devil May Care Heads to Belmont

on June 24, 2010

After a setback in the Kentucky Derby, Devil May Care is now getting ready to take on a small field in the Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park.

Keen to prove herself in a fillies-only environment the three-year-old will be competing for the purse of $250,000 this Saturday June 26.

Devil May Care came in 10th in this year’s Kentucky Derby after running a decent race for most of the distance, before folding under pressure on the home stretch. While this was a disappointing result for the filly who stuck with the leaders of the field for the lion’s share of the Derby, trainer Todd Pletcher saw the potential for a slightly shorter distance.

The Mother Goose Stakes, run over 1 1/8 miles originally, has this year been shortened to 1 1/16 miles. This distance seems perfect for Pletcher’s Devil May Care, who has celebrated some great wins over similar lengths prior to the Derby let-down. As the filly has been training since her Kentucky Derby appearance, Pletcher thought about entering her into the Belmont Stakes but decided to save her energies for the Mother Goose, she is in her finest career form.

Devil May Care will be facing challenging rivals: her stable mates Ailalea and Katie now, and Connie And Michael from the training stables of Kenny McPeek. These four runners are all set to test Devil May Care’s abilities when the time comes to hit the track.

Katy Now scored a victory over six furlongs last months, Ailalea was first across the line in the Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs – making both ladies likely pace makers for the early stages of tomorrow’s race. Connie And Michael recorded a win in one of the first-level allowance race at Churchill Downs Racecourse; proving her ability to maintain great speed under great pressure.
