2010 World Cup Wrap

Spain are the champions of the world. After a difficult and sometimes uninspiring final, Andreas Iniesta scored the only goal in what was one of the most physical World Cup matches in recent history.
The Netherlands had their chances, namely through Arjen Robben. The Bayern Munich winger had one clear chance to put his side in front after being fed a lovely through-ball. Unfortunately for the Dutchman, a trailing Iker Casillas leg kept The Orange from taking an unlikely lead.
Spain also had several opportunities in regular time. David Villa missed a couple of chances from tight angles, while Cesc Fabregas blew a golden opportunity not dissimilar to Robben’s previous one-on-one attempt. After almost two hours of football though, it was Iniesta who found himself unmarked in the area, and he was able to keep his cool to blast the ball past Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
The match completed what was a rather forgettable World Cup. A lack of goals, at times unexciting football, and the Jabulani unfortunately took away from what should have been Africa’s proudest sporting moment of all time.
But, as with all football tournaments, we take the good with the bad. Thank the heavens for Germany! The young Germans always looked like they came to the World Cup to play, and their four-something drubbings of Australia, England, and Argentina proved that they had the skill to back up their verve.
Thanks to an unusually low goal count at the tournament, four players tied for the Golden Boot award with five goals each, however it was Thomas Muller who eventually claimed the title thanks to his three additional assists. The 20-year-old had a phenomenal tournament, and was able to cap it off with the Golden Boot and Young Player of the Tournament awards. The Golden Ball, Golden Glove, and FIFA Fair Play awards are all still to be announced.
