EPL Wrap – Week 23
Author: TheDoctor31 Jan
It was a weekend fraught with missed opportunities in the Premier League. Hull gave up the lead twice and had to settle for a draw, while Arsenal simply couldn’t hold off the Wayne Rooney express train as they lost 1-3 at home.
We’re getting to the business end of the 2009-10 season, and it’s about this time that managers will start getting nervous. With the transfer window closing today, we may very well see some last minute changes – but even new players won’t be able to help some clubs facing the drop.
For now, let’s recap the four best games of Week 23. And don’t forget that there are still three more games to be played mid-week; BetUS has posted odds on all of them.
Sunderland: +105
Draw: +225
Stoke City: +275
Hull City: +850
Draw: +385
Chelsea: -325
Fulham: -140
Draw: +250
Portsmouth: +400
Liverpool (2) vs. Bolton Wanderers (0): Liverpool continued their good run of form with a routine win over Bolton at Anfield.
It wasn’t an easy result for Rafa’s men to achieve, however, as both goals fell into the region of “lucky”. Unbeaten in six league matches, the Reds should have been confident going into Saturday’s fixture, but it certainly didn’t show. Dominance on the ball was all Bolton’s and they still lacked a defensive flair, creating headaches for their manager. Still, the first goal came for Liverpool from Dirk Kuyt; an embarrassing failure to clear the ball from Bolton meant Alberto Aquilani was able to find Kuyt unmarked.
Despite a mediocre performance in the opening 45, Liverpool managed to turn things around in the second half, putting plenty more shots on goal and keeping the ball all to themselves. Their persistence paid off in the 69th minute when a double deflection ended up finding its way into the Bolton netting, eventually being determined a Kevin Davies own goal.
Hull City (2) vs. Wolves (2): The Tigers took the lead twice but simply couldn’t avoid bad luck as they stumbled to their ninth consecutive game without a win.
Yet to take a win since November, this week was Hull’s best chance to nab three points at home. They started off extremely well after Jozy Altidore played through Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The big Dutchman belted the ball past Marcus Hahnemann and it was looking good for Hull fans. Managing to stave off the Wolves attack for the remainder of the first half, Hull went into the dressing room a goal to the good.
However, almost immediately after returning to the pitch, Wolves found an equalizer. A seemingly harmless cross into the box was put into the back of the net for a bizarre Anthony Gardner own-goal. Only three minutes later, though, the ball was in the other net. Ronald Zubar had a brain-snap and took down Altidore in the box. He was punished accordingly, and Stephen Hunt made no mistake from the spot. It looked like Hull might just manage their first win of 2010, but that was put to bed when Matt Jarvis’ strike took a wicked deflection past Boaz Myhill.
Burnley (1) vs. Chelsea (2): Even with their stellar home record, Burnley were unable to overcome league leaders Chelsea, and condemned their new manager to his fourth straight loss.
It was all one-way traffic in the opening half as the Blues pushed for an early goal. New signing Leon Cort had to be on his best to ward off the ever-dangerous Joe Cole. While defence looked solid, the Clarets were simply never going to keep Chelsea out forever; that point was confirmed on 26 minutes when Nicolas Anelka grabbed his 12th goal of the season.
A Brian Laws team talk must have spurned something inside the home side because they came out for the second all-guns-blazing. Within four minutes of the restart, Steven Fletcher equalized with a wonderful move, earning his 10th goal of the campaign. Chelsea weren’t going to sit back and play out a draw though, and when Joe Cole’s 56th minute effort was ruled offside they went on the offensive. Dominance usually reaps goals, and in the 82nd minute, the Chelsea captain ruined the evening for Clarets fans with a winner.
Manchester City (2) vs. Portsmouth (0): Roberto Mancini kept a smile on his face with yet another home victory. Portsmouth were on the receiving end of a City side that were simply too good.
It was a fairly routine win for the Citizens as both Emmanuel Adebayor and Vincent Kompany ruined any chance of an upset. The loss puts Avram Grant in the unenviable position of facing relegation. His squad has failed to improve since his introduction, and after losing Younes Kaboul to Tottenham, it’s hard to see them performing any better in the weeks to come.
