For now, let’s take a look at a couple of the best matches so far, and look towards Wednesday night’s action.

Manchester United (4) vs. Hull City (0): The reigning champions produced some vintage football to return to the top of the Barclays Premier League table. Wayne Rooney managed an incredible four goals to cruise past relegation bound Hull in Saturday’s only fixture.

Things didn’t start well for the travelling fans as United took the lead after only seven minutes. After a stunning long-range effort from Paul Scholes was parried away by keeper Boaz Myhill, Rooney converted a half chance into his 17th goal of the season. Plenty of opportunities arose for the home side in the opening 45, but none were taken.

The second half was an entirely different matter. Hull made a couple of good chances, and had every chance of levelling the game up; unfortunately for the visitors, they lacked the finishing touch to do the job, and Rooney immediately pounced. Three goals in less than 10 minutes began when the England international smashed the ball past Andy Dawson, grabbed his hat-trick three minutes later, and rounded off a four-goal haul from nothing in stoppage time.

Bolton Wanderers (1) vs. Burnley: Only a goal separated both sides at the final whistle, but it was another painful reminder of just how poor Burnley’s away form has been this season. With the sort of results the Clarets have been producing at home, it’s fair to say that fans will be unhappy with just a single point on the road this season.

It was the matchup Burnley fans had been waiting for as they faced off against their former manager. Owen Coyle’s new club had the experience, but the match still kicked off at a startling pace. With defence taking a backseat, there were several chances for both clubs in the opening half hour. The breakthrough didn’t come until the 34th minute, however, when South Korean youngster Chung-Yong Lee found himself in space inside the area and walloped the ball into the underside of the crossbar. Although the ball ended up outside of the goal, Lee had done just enough to get the ball over the line.

Missed opportunities were plentiful for the remainder of the game, and Burnley will be kicking themselves that they weren’t able to take away anything from this matchup.

Everton vs. Sunderland: 2010 has breathed new life into Everton as they are on a six-game unbeaten run. With Jo away in Turkey until the end of the season, loan signing Landon Donovan will likely play a much larger role in the Toffees’ attack. The hosts are strong favorites to win, and anything else would be seen as points wasted by David Moyes.

Sunderland have seen themselves fall from a possible European berth to 13th on the ladder. Without a win in their last six games, the Black Cats’ season is starting to look oddly reminiscent of Hull City’s initial foray into top-flight football. Their away form has been shocking, to say the least, with only a single point from their last six games on the road, and against an in-form Everton it will be a tough ask for them to take anything home with them.
