Serena WilliamsThere has been plenty of action at the Australian Open as the old favorites continue to heat up the courts.  With Round 4 just around the corner, here’s a look at which players are still in line to win the Grand Slam tournament.

Novak Djokovic started Thursday’s action off with a second round match against Davis Cupper Marco Chinudinelli.  This match lasted the longest of any of the seeded men to play on Thursday, with Djokovic finally taking the game after four sets. The relatively unknown Chinudinelli turned a few heads early on when he took the first set 6-3, breaking Djokovic’s serve in the sixth and eighth games.  Though Djokovic managed to go up two sets to one, and finish off Chinudinelli in just under three hours with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 win.

Nikolay Davydenko is also still in the running for his first Grand Slam title after defeating Illya Marchenko in one hour and 49 minutes.  It was an easy 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 win for the Russian ace.

Roger Federer may have had a somewhat shaky start, but the Swiss born superstar looked to be back in top form as he clobbered Romanian competitor Victor Hanescu in three sets.  It seems that even the presence of Prince William can’t shake this tennis pro as he amassed an impressive 52 winners and broke Hanescu’s serve five times en route to his 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win to advance to the next round.

Other notable names still in contention for the Aussie title are Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick as all three advanced through to the next round.  They’ll take to the courts on Friday, January 22 in hopes of securing a place in Round 4.

Many of the favorites on the women’s side are also still in contention, though the first rounds of the game haven’t been without their casualties.  Most notably, Maria Sharapova who didn’t make it past Round 1.  Also falling early on in the tournament was Ana Ivanovic.  In a highly forgettable performance, Ivanovic committed 146 unforced errors in her 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 loss to Gisela Dulko.

World No. 1 Serena Williams is still plowing through the competition after an easy 6-2, 6-7 win in just 67 minutes over Petra Kvitova.  Sister Venus is also still battling it out though opponent Sybille Bammer made Venus work for her win in the champion’s latest match.  Bammer, after falling down 5-3 in the second, managed to level the score at 5-5.  Unfortunately her success didn’t last long as Venus finished off the 6-2, 7-5 win.

Caroline Wozniacki, ranked number four in the world, is also still battling it out after an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Julia Goerges.  Wozniacki will now go on to face 29th seed Shahar Peer for a spot in Round 4.  All eyes will also be on Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin as these two superstars take to the courts to continue to blaze through the field in their highly talked about return to tennis.
