Best goal celebration of the seasonWe may not have been treated to as many goals this weekend, but there was still a lot to get excited about with the quality of football on offer.

It’s time to get down to business with a review of the best the EPL had to offer this week.

Manchester City (1) vs. Hull City (1): It was another disappointing night for Mark Hughes at Eastlands, as his side slumped to a record-equalling seventh successive draw.

The game started well for The Citizens, as they held onto possession for the majority of the opening 45. However, Hull’s substitute keeper Matt Duke was in fine form for the Tigers, and made more than a few important saves. His chance for a clean sheet vanished though when Shaun Wright-Phillips saw his shot deflected into the back of the net in first half injury time.

With only a goal between them, Hull returned from the break with enough confidence to take something away from the game. They managed to exploit defensive weaknesses as the match went on, and Richard Garcia almost grabbed the equalizer after Jozy Altidore set him up. While Joleon Lescott managed to clear off the line, City could do nothing to stop Jimmy Bullard’s 81st minute penalty, and both clubs walked away with a point.

Portsmouth (1) vs. Manchester United (4): Referee Mike Dean was getting friendly with his whistle on Saturday as three of the five goals scored in this game were converted penalties.

Things didn’t start too badly for Pompey, as new manager Avram Grant looked to kick things off with a bang. They held their own against United in the opening minutes, but a soft challenge on Wayne Rooney granted the Red Devils their first goal. Portsmouth fans weren’t upset with Dean for too long, however, as only eight minutes later they were celebrating their own penalty.

Going into the break level with United would have given Pompey plenty of confidence, but a halftime team-talk from Ferguson reinvigorated the visitors, and they returned for the second with two goals in seven minutes. With Rooney grabbing a hat trick, and United already home, Ryan Giggs put away his 100th Premier League goal on the eve of his 36th birthday.

West Ham United (5) vs. Burnley (3): Even three late strikes couldn’t spell a successful comeback for Burnley in an eight-goal thriller.

After a poor performance at Hull last weekend, The Hammers were keen to grab all three points at home. And knowing that Burnley have failed to take anything more than a point in their travels it was only natural that West Ham would run out eventual winners. Jack Collison started things off spectacularly for The Hammers, with Junior Stanislas and Carlton Cole also getting on the scoresheet in the opening 45.

It was one-way traffic after the break as well, with Guillermo Franco making it 4-0 before a second West Ham penalty was converted by Luis Jimenez. Burnley seemed to wake up after that, but even a Steven Fletcher brace and third from Chris Eagles couldn’t get them back into the game.

Everton (0) vs. Liverpool (2): Liverpool finally grabbed a much-need victory away from home. After a string of poor results, Rafa Benitez has put his side right back in contention for a European berth.

The match started unfortunately for Everton, who have also been victims to poor form recently. Javier Mascherano took a punt from 30 yards out and, thanks to a heavy deflection from Joseph Yobo, the Argentine snatched only his second ever Premier League goal. After that, The Toffees attempted to find an equalizer, but a few good saves, coupled with two goals denied for Jo from the linesman, meant that Everton went into the break a goal down.

The second half played out much the same as the first: Everton creating the majority of the opportunities, but Liverpool taking advantage of their luck. After Pepe Reina managed to stop first Tim Cahill’s header, and then Marouane Fellaini’s follow-up, Liverpool doubled their lead with Dirk Kuyt in the 80th minute.
