SPORT NBAAllen Iverson has seen some hard times in the NBA in the past couple of years. With his star slowly fading, the guy found himself struggling to sign with a team. He lasted only three games with the Grizzlies this season, and when the Knicks passed up the opportunity to sign him, it left many people asking what Iverson would do next.

Well, the answer is: retire. The NBA superstar released a statement on Stephen A. Smith’s website, announcing that he would be retiring from the NBA after 13 seasons, saying, “I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association. I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.”

His decision to leave basketball behind is somewhat of a surprise as he is considered by many to be one of the best point scorers in the league. He was known as ‘The Answer’ and has four scoring titles and an MVP title from his stint with the Sixers. He has a playoff scoring average of 29.7 points, which ranks second in history. Unfortunately for the small forward, his reputation made him less than desirable, and when he stopped pulling in big numbers no one seemed interested.

Though this seems like it might be the end for Iverson, he did hint that he still has plenty left to give, saying, “I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.”

His former Denver coach, George Karl, agreed with Iverson’s sentiments, as did Boston coach Doc Rivers and Smith who posted Iverson’s shock announcement on his website. LeBron James even commented on the loss of ‘The Answer’. But despite the opinions of coaches, players, and fans, it seems that Iverson is content to call it quits … for now.
