Jermain DefoeAll I can say is: wow! This was indisputably the best week of English football this season. The Premier League was goal central, and plenty of teams had a lot to smile about. The ball struck the back of the net an incredible 34 times in only ten matches, with several games being hailed as an instant classics.

But the week isn’t over for four Premier League clubs, as Wednesday will host matches between Hull City and Everton, and Fulham and Blackburn Rovers. BetUS will post odds on the games prior to kick off.

For now, let’s take a look back at four of the best games of the weekend.

Hull City (3) vs. West Ham (3): Players and fans alike have described it as one of the best contests of the season, and, surprisingly, it came from two clubs fighting relegation.

West Ham were slight favorites in the lead up to the match, and they proved just how keen they were for a win after only five minutes. Within the space of six minutes, both Guillermo Franco and Jack Collison had put the ball past substitute keeper Matt Duke to give West Ham a two-goal buffer. Tigers fans could have been forgiven for thinking that was the end of it all, but a late first half surge saw them take the lead against all odds. It started with Jimmy Bullard’s free kick deflecting off Carlton Cole, before Kamil Zayatte equalized in the 43rd minute. Craig Fagan was brought down in the area right before halftime, and Jimmy Bullard smashed the penalty home to grab his first goal for Hull City.

Gianfranco Zola would have been wondering what happened at halftime, but his side came back for the second all guns blazing. Bernard Mendy was given a straight red after taking down Scott Parker on a brilliant run, and the Tigers had to finish the match with ten men. West Ham finally struck the equalizer after the Hull defence failed to clear a corner, and Manuel Da Costa got his name on the scoresheet.

Chelsea (4) vs. Wolverhampton (0): Chelsea had to deal without the skills of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, and Didier Drogba, who had picked up a few knocks prior to the international break. However, they were up against opponents who never really looked like taking the game into their own hands.

The Pensioners couldn’t have started the match any better when Florent Malouda struck in the fourth minute. It looked like the contest would be quite one-sided from the get go, and that opinion was backed up when Michael Essien earned a brace within nine minutes. After 21 minutes and three goals down, Wolves looked out of their depth, and the scoreline could have been worse had it not been for some fine saves from Welsh international Wayne Hennessey.

After the break, Chelsea picked up right where they left off and even managed to add to their goal tally with Joe Cole grabbing his first in over 13 months. Injury has plagued the English winger, but he looked very much at home in front of more than 40,000 Chelsea stalwarts.

Manchester United (3) vs. Everton (0): Before kickoff, Manchester United knew that they were sitting eight points below Chelsea with a game in hand. They were in a very similar position this time last season, and after a loss against Arsenal, rallied themselves to a 16-match unbeaten run. A comprehensive victory over Everton this weekend may just have started things off again.

Despite the first half hour passing by without a goal, it was all Manchester United. The Devils controlled most of the play, and their possession rate was through the roof. However, it wasn’t until Darren Fletcher scored one of the best goals of the season that United could loosen up.

The second half started a lot better than the first with plenty of efforts on goal, but it was Michael Carrick who grabbed the second, with a long-range effort finding its way past Tim Howard. Two goals up, Alex Ferguson felt comfortable enough to take off Wayne Rooney, and three minutes later Antonio Valencia grabbed his second United goal with a deflected effort capping off a 3-0 victory.

Tottenham Hotspur (9) vs. Wigan (1): Tottenham Hotspur have pulled off the biggest win of the season so far by scoring an incredible nine times in a goal fiesta. Roberto Martinez’s side will have to pick themselves up and forget about this one if they are to have any chance of a win in their next match.

Even though Peter Crouch managed to nick the first goal in after only nine minutes, Wigan didn’t play too badly in the first half. They looked sharp, and the case could’ve even been argued that they went into the break with all the momentum.

The second half, however, was a completely different story. Chris Kirkland couldn’t save a shot on target, and Jermain Defoe ran circles around the Wigan defence. His first goal came in the 51st minute, and only seven minutes later he claimed a hat-trick. Two more strikes lifted his total to five goals for the game, with Aaron Lennon and Niko Kranjcar adding their names to the incredible scoreline.
