Mike Brown vs. Jose Aldo is a featherweight championship fight, and on paper it looks like bad news for the champ. Aldo has won every one of his fights in the WEC by TKO, with his last 3 fights finished in the first round, including his latest fight against Cub Swanson that took only 8 seconds. Brown doesn’t have many paths to victory either, as he specializes in submissions, and Aldo is a BJJ black belt who will be hard to catch. The striking ability of Brown is slightly underrated by his opponents, however, so an unwary Aldo may get caught. It’s an interesting match up that should really put the champion to the test.

Another compelling fight is Manny Gamburyan vs. Leonard Garcia. It must be fate that Manny Gamburyan is fighting this week, as his cousin Karo Parisyan will be fighting in UFC 106 on Saturday, and their training partner Karen Darabedyan is also on this WEC card. Seems like it will be a great week for Armenian MMA fans if both Manny and Karo win. I have a feeling that’s going to be the case, but it won’t come easy for either of them. Things haven’t been great for Manny Gamburyan lately, seeing as he’s lost 2 of his last 3 fights. Featherweight looks to be good for him, though, and a win over Garcia could see Gamburyan on the path to a title shot.

Rob McCullough vs. Karen Darabedyan will see Darabedyan make his WEC debut and McCullough prove whether he has a place in the WEC anymore. McCullough has not been able to gain any momentum since he lost the WEC featherweight title, with every win followed by a new loss. Having said that, he is rightly the favorite in this match up, but he’ll need to prove that he deserves people’s confidence if he’s ever to get near a title shot again.

There are many rumors flying around about the WEC merging with the UFC, but I think time will have to tell. The injuries and illnesses plaguing most of the UFC title holders do seem to suggest that the addition of more weight classes could be helpful, but Dana White has been pretty vocal in the past about keeping the UFC weight classes simple. There are still plenty of saleable main events that don’t require a title shot, so I wouldn’t count out the WEC until we see yet another Mike Brown vs. Urijah Faber rematch headlining a UFC card.
