EPL Wrap – Week 12
Author: TheDoctor8 Nov
This weekend has been one of the biggest in terms of league tables shifts, with Chelsea going five points clear at the top, and lowly Hull City moving out of the relegation zone.
There is still one match to be played on Monday, with Liverpool hosting Birmingham City. BetUS has posted odds on the match.
Liverpool: -285
Draw: +350
Birmingham City: +900
Let’s wrap up the best games of week 12 in the English Premier League.
Manchester City (3) vs. Burnley (3): Burnley grabbed their first away point of the season, while Manchester City struggled to deal with their fifth consecutive draw.
The game started extremely well for the visitors, with Robbie Blake driving the first chance of the game just wide. However, the Clarets didn’t have to wait long for the opener after Joleon Lescott handled the ball inside the area. Burnley were awarded the penalty, and Graham Alexander converted it easily. Thirteen minutes later they were in again after Steven Fletcher grabbed his third of the season, and Manchester City looked to be heading into the dressing rooms two behind; however, Shaun Wright-Phillips managed to half the deficit when his strike was deflected into the back of the net.
The game was changed from there, and City had all the possession early in the second half. Clarets fans were stunned when, within the space of three minutes, they went from being a goal in front to a goal behind. Kolo Toure’s strike was followed up in the 58th minute by Craig Bellamy’s, and City were intent on hanging onto possession. It looked to be all but over with only a few minutes remaining when, seemingly from nowhere, Kevin McDonald grabbed the sixth goal, and Burnley’s saving grace.
Aston Villa (5) vs. Bolton Wanderers (1): After only two points from their last three matches, Aston Villa finally grabbed a convincing Premier League victory. Their opponents, Bolton, have been in unpredictable form but they never looked like a challenge away from home.
The game started with a huge bang after Ashley Young found his name on the scoresheet after only five minutes. John Carew led the set-up play, and did so once more three minutes out from halftime. Gabriel Agbonlahor grabbed Villa’s second, but when Johan Elmander halved the deficit, the match was anyone’s for the taking.
Despite only being a goal down, Bolton found themselves under the pump from the restart, with Norwegian international John Carew running circles around his opponents. He managed to grab a goal for himself, before earning a penalty for James Milner after being fouled in the area. Jussi Jaaskelainen managed to save the attempt, but he was unable to defend the follow-up. Carlos Cuellar put the icing on the cake in the 75th minute, and Aston Villa ran out four-goal winners.
Blackburn Rovers (3) vs. Portsmouth (1): Pompey didn’t manage to follow-up on their thrilling 4-0 rout of Wigan last weekend as they slumped to yet another Premier League loss.
Jamie O’Hara got things under way in magnificent fashion after his thirty-yard strike put Portsmouth into the lead. Rovers had no response and played some shocking football before the break, but a lecture from Sam Allardyce in the dressing room seemed to do the trick.
With Diouf and Pedersen being substituted for Jason Roberts and Benni McCarthy, Blackburn had far more options up front, and they proved it with an equalizer on 53 minutes. That goal seemed to turn around their game entirely, and soon after their captain had put them into the lead with a wonderfully taken header. Pompey fans would have been hoping for a late comeback, but any chance of that happening was quashed four minutes from time when Roberts grabbed his second goal, and all three points for Blackburn.
Chelsea (1) vs. Manchester United (0): In arguably the most anticipated match of the season so far, the Blues just managed to overcome the reigning premiers in a game that offered little in the way of chances.
Didier Drogba was a constant threat, as was Ivanovic and Michael Ballack, but some stalwart goalkeeping from Edwin Van der Sar kept the home side scoreless in the opening 45. Likewise, Wayne Rooney kept Petr Cech busy as the lone striker, but failed to make any serious threats to the score line.
The nil-all halftime score affirmed that the game was failing to live up to expectations, but both clubs returned to the field with a willingness to attack the ball. John Terry’s goal from Frank Lampard’s free-kick ended up being the decider in a match that disappointed more than a few neutral fans.
