Darren Bent scores against LiverpoolAnother big weekend of football is behind us, with only one match remaining. Tonight, Fulham will take on Hull City, and you can head over to BetUS to check out all the latest odds and lines.

For now, let’s recap some of the best games from Week 9 of the English Premier League.

Sunderland (1) vs. Liverpool (0): Liverpool’s dismal start to the season continued in embarrassing fashion as they were handed yet another loss.

Captain Steven Gerrard and in-form Fernando Torres were both missing due to injury, and it showed early on. However, the fifth-minute goal by Darren Bent was achieved in contentious fashion after it deflected off a red beach ball that had been thrown onto the pitch. Referee Mike Jones had no choice but to award it as a Sunderland goal, but Liverpool fans were livid.

However, the lacklustre effort put in by the Reds for the remaining 85 minutes proved all too well that Liverpool were never in contention to take away a single point, let alone all three. The game finished 1-0, with Sunderland deserving winners.

Arsenal (3) vs. Birmingham City (1): Arsenal continued their wonderful run with a 3-1 home win against Birmingham. They now have 18 points from 8 games, and have a match in hand against the three clubs sitting above them on the leaderboard.

Arsenal came out all guns blazing with two goals in two minutes. Robin van Persie struck first with a professional attacking effort that was followed shortly after by Abou Diaby collecting the second. The first half was marred by an injury to Theo Walcott, and Andrey Arshavin was brought on to replace him in the 32nd minute. Five minutes later, Lee Bowyer took advantage of a mistake by young keeper Vito Mannone, and Birmingham were right back in the game at 2-1.

The second half began, and City looked like a team revitalized. They kept the Gunners pinned back, and had more than one opportunity to equalize; however, it was Arsenal who put the game beyond doubt when Arshavin cleaned up in the 84th minute.

Manchester United (2) vs. Bolton Wanderers (1): Manchester United have proven yet again that they don’t need the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo or Carlos Tevez to win league games. While the victory wasn’t convincing, they will be pleased to take all three points and the top place on the Premier League table.

It was an own goal that ultimately undid Bolton, and it all began with Zat Knight putting the ball into the back of his own net after four minutes. Luis Antonio Valencia made it 2-0 with his first Premier League goal since his £17 million transfer from Wigan Athletic over the summer.

United failed to put the game beyond doubt in the second half, and Michael Owen missed several opportunities to get his name on the scoresheet. Without the services of the injured Wayne Rooney, United couldn’t find a reliable finisher, and Bolton took advantage with a 75th minute goal by Matt Taylor. It wasn’t enough, however, and Bolton fans may well think they could have at least stolen a point at Old Trafford.

Blackburn Rovers (3) vs. Burnley (2): Burnley scored the first and last goals of the match, but simply couldn’t find a way past Blackburn Rovers at home. The win puts Blackburn in a much more secure position, and only two points shy of the top half of the table.

The first half saw an incredible four goals fly into the back of the net, with the opener coming from Burnley’s own Robbie Blake. However, an attacking display from Blackburn that lasted 35 minutes saw David Dunn, Franco Di Santo, and Pascal Chimbonda all get their names on the scoresheet.

The second half followed a similar course, with the Clarets struggling to find possession and goal opportunities. Their second goal did come eventually, but at 92 minutes it was far too late to do any real damage.
